BOOKS ON THE PHILIPPINES
There are several books I would reccomend on Phil. History 1. Waltzing with a Dictator BY Bob Woodward (Watergate author) about US involvement in the Marcos government, Non Fiction 2 A town Like Alice BY Nevil Schute Fiction but based on facts about WWII women prisioners prisioners of war and the ordeal they went through in the Philippines after their capture. 3 Share of Honor UNknown author Fiction but based on facts also about WWII and the heroic actions of both US and Philippine Soldiers
Also, since he is often mentioned here, and at least two list memebers served under him, I highly recommend 'American Caesar, William Manchester's definitive biography of MacArthur. For those who didn't have much interest in history during school years, this book is also a fascinating glimpse of America's coming of age from the turn of the last centrury to the brilliant Inchon landings of the Korean war.
If you want to find out about the history of the PI, you should restrict yourself to NON-fiction books. Fiction books based on historical events are fraught with errors and often present events as fact when they are not. Even books that are non-fiction are often mis-leading and not factual. Read and decide for yourself and try to ascertain why the author is writing the book. Authors often write books, particularly non-fiction, with a hidden goal to put forth a personal viewpoint and they present factual information (?) in skewed fashion. For instance, read a couple of books on the Rape of Nanking; one author from Japan and one author from China or U.S. and you would not recognize that they are talking about the same incident in History. The saying "Buyer Beware" can also be "Reader Beware".
Due to the law of copyright, they are all quite old, that is, published before 1923, and thus dated, both in the facts and the ways of dealing with them. The list follows, and should provide you with a couple of weeks worth of reading materials....
Dave is quite correct that "A Town Like Alice" is set in Sumatra and not the Philippines. I watched a Nat Geo special on the Death Railway today. The most notorious Japanese camp commander, Lt Abay, went to his grave telling young Japanese the allied POWs died because they didn't like rice and so didn't eat enough to stay healthy. An insult to the men who died and survived, but Gen MacArthur is as much to blame for the Japanese not knowing the truth as anyone else. An interesting fact is that the two Japanese Divisions that were involved in the Bataan Dath March were the 11th and 14th, one from Hiroshima and the other from Nagasaki. I wonder if those cities were targeted because of their treatment of US and Filipino POW's? "A Share of Honor" is by Richard Greaves and weaves an incredible amount of historical fact into a terrific novel. I loaned my copy out and haven't seen it since, guess I'll never learn! David G.
Jeroen, when you list Noli me Tangere, Jose Rizal 1912, is that when the copy you have scanned was published? My copy says he wrote it in Spanish and had it published in Berlin in 1887, and of course I'm positive he was executed in 1896. Thanks for putting up a great resource for those of us interested in Filipino history and literature.
I listed the date that particular English translation was first published (and I used a copy of that first edition). This was the first complete English translation -- on older translation under the title "An Eagles Flight" from 1900 was much abridged.
