FROM THE CRYSTAL BALL:
[Real Estate] We have been pushing Pampanga as a future boom
destination and it surely seems to be working out to be that way.
But, after a fast trip to Samar, I was surprised to discover another
future boom destination for those who are brave enough to be
pioneers in what seems to be a "sure thing" for those with some
longevity. I spent a few days in Catarman, where my business partner
and long time friend, Butch "Boots" Bonsol is running a very active
campaign for Councilwoman in that area. Only one hour's flight by
Seair from Manila, Samar boasts (actually, they don't boast loud
enough) some of the most beautiful, unspoiled beaches in the
Philippines. If Boracay beaches are 100%, (at least they were before
progress and overdevelopment set in) then Samar can claim to be 95%.
I particularly looked at some really nice white sand beaches in
Catarman. Most have electricity and water available and a few
resorts are slowly developing, courtesy of Chris Bech, among others
who have made Catarman their adopted home. The beaches are clean and
the water is bright and sparkling. From most beaches there is a
clear view of the Mayon Volcano and some islands close enough to
almost touch. Beach property is still reasonable (actually, pretty
damned cheap,) but going up at a little faster pace with all the
recent publicity in that area. It seems that explorers are at long
last discovering that part of Samar.
Catarman is still a bit sleepy (okay, okay. It actually snores) and
that's where the charm comes in. If rest and recreation is what you
are looking for, mosey on down (or is it up) to Catarman and find
yourself a beautiful beach or an uninhabited island and buy yourself
a chunk of what really could be called "a paradise." Yeh, yeh, I
know "paradise" is a much-used overrated word and I guess I got
carried away, but take it for what it's worth. If you have an
allergy to flying, you can take an (ugh!) 16 hour bus trip (hell no,
not this kid,) or you can drive your own car cutting the driving
time down a few hours, but if you bring a pillow for the puwet, it
just might cut down on the agony and it would be a worthwhile trip.
Bring some Pesos as well and put a chunk of it down on some of that
great beach property. I'll be seeing you there, but I'm going by
Seair.
