Title: WE\'RE MIGRATING BACK TO SMF!!
Post by: Gray Wolf on October 29, 2012, 11:53:14 PM
ALL MEMBERS AND GUESTS --   I have great news for all!  I\'ve received notification from Don Herrington that our forum will be migrated back to our old home with SMF!  I don\'t have an exact date or time yet, but I would say it could happen within the next few days.

For all of you who care about this forum, especially those who sent me private emails encouraging me, making suggestions, cursing me and kicking me in the can to get me moving, Thank You, one and all!    :)

I know we lost many good people and ask all of you who have email addresses for those we haven\'t seen for a while to let them know we\'re going to migrate back to SMF.  As I have more detailed info I\'ll pass it along.  But it looks like happy days will soon be here again!   :)   :)   :)

Great news. Once you get it back up and running then I also suggest a mass email to the members telling them the old forum is back since this new one seems to have frustrated a lot of people who may have left and will surely be happy again when the old format is back.

You are welcome for my size 11 shoe in your butt from time to time.    ;)

I find it hard to understand why there has been such a big problem, I can name another site that uses the same software and has never had a problem. It also looks very good, far better than the old LinP. Would it not be better to find someone that understands the new system than take a retrograde step and going back to the old software. Surely this is going to cause even more confusion and be the final straw for LinP. Just my honest opinion.

Colin I understand where you are coming from but the old saying if it ain\'t broke don\'t fix it seems to apply. The forum was working pretty good with the old software and has had many problems with the new software. Members tend to not be forgiving or have patience when they have problems accessing or using a forum and this one has given them plenty to complain about both on the forum and off.

Now with that said, I could live with the new software as a member here but I would prefer the old software and it seems some others might as well. I am not saying this to argue with you, just to point out my point of view as a member.

This software does not have pm abilities and that sort of defeats the purpose of a community. Then next it does not have preview post which makes it a pain to see if photos posted correctly without having to post them and then edit the post. The back key does not work well when posting and trying to fix a post and that is a real pain.

Next and probably pretty important to many, it seems lots of people knew how to work the old software but quite a few have been complaining about this software both on and off the forum and it is obvious to me that the forum has pretty much died not long after changing over. Where are all the old posters? Where are the ones who had been posting and stopped when the software stopped working. Some software is harder to work than others and I know that for a fact because I have played with SM, IPB and VBulletin and SM was the easiest to use, setup and work on.

Since Jack and others knew how to work on that one, then the question is why should they pull their hair out trying to learn a new software that obviously is hard to use and must have glitches in it.

I for one think a forum should be user friendly and most of us older guys seem to have problems wanting to learn new stuff, so many of us, myself included, were sad to see this new software in the first place but I still stuck around and tried to help the forum keep going by posting on it anyway but it seems a lot of others were discouraged and we can only pray they all come back and more to make the forum a success again. And lets all hope the re-install goes without glitches.

Lee, I agree with the saying ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’, the old forum was not broke but it was ‘fixed’. The problem seems to be that the main site software was changed to Joomla and Kunina ties in with it. Having spoken to someone that has successfully set up exactly the same system, I understand that the problem most likely lies with a lack of understanding in the way Joomla interfaces with Kunena and not Kunena itself. I am told that Kunena is simpler than SMS and therefore less prone to finger trouble.

I can understand members losing patience because this problem has been allowed to go on for so long. The problems should have been cleared in days but are continuing weeks later. The software does work; it is just that the administrators don’t seem to understand it.

I agree that not having a PM is a negative aspect, but I believe it can be added. Kunena does have a preview button; maybe it just has not been implemented. There are only a few very minor differences between Kunena and SMS, I don’t see that they should cause anyone any problems.

I regularly use this system on another forum and find it easy to use with no problems. I think that going back to the old system now is going to cause more problems than it solves, and I doubt if it will bring back the members that have left. Dons forum may have been the first, but there are now a number of alternatives to be found with a simple search, and the missing members may have found them.

The old forum was not compatible with Joomla, which is the software for the website.  Our purpose in changing to start with was because Don and I wanted to merge the website and forum under one url.  The only way to do it was to change the software for the forum to something compatible with Joomla.  Kunena was the software chosen for us.

As Lee pointed out, there are many things different in Kunena versus Simple Machines Forum (SMF) our old software.  Those differences, although seemingly small on the surface, have made a huge difference in how we operate.  Some changes were good, but the bad aspects far outwiegh the good.

The problem was \"allowed to go on for so long\" because no one gave the administrators proper instruction in it\'s use.  You can blame the admins all you want, but without proper training, no one can make the changes necessary to \"fix\" this system and force it to work.  The people who initially guided us through this have abandoned us, left us adrift to fend for ourselves.  That\'s simply not acceptable.  With only minimal choices left, we have chosen to return to SMF, software we\'d all gotten used to for several years.

I would hope that everyone bears with us and we regain what we once had.  There is a tremendous amount of competition in forums and the bad economy worldwide has caused many to rethink their priorities.  Hackers, scoundrels and pirates have skimmed off many of our members.  But I still think we can have a great forum and look forward to making that come true.  I also look to all our members to work with me and maintain a positive outlook.

Yes, a PM system can be added.  But does anyone know how to do it?  I don\'t.  I\'ve spent hours reading all the information I could on the different PM system software packages available that are compatible with Joomla, so did Gerlie, Don\'s assistant.  We couldn\'t figure it out and when we asked questions from Kunena and Joomla about how to do it correctly we were rudely told by their admins to go find out how on our own and stop asking stupid questions.  Not a nice way to deal with what I consider a customer service situation.

PM system aside, the problems we\'re having shouldn\'t be happening.  So, as soon as I can get it coordinated, we will return to SMF and our former reliable system.  I will then send out a mass mailing, somehow, to all our members inviting them \"back home\".

I just received email notification that a backup of all our database has been requested and we have an experienced tech who stands ready to migrate the forum back to SMF as soon as all our files are backed up.

This may take a few days however since it is All Saints Day and we\'re coming up on the weekend.  So, everyone be patient and we\'ll be back to full steam soon.

Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding!   :)   :)   :)

It will be great to be back on the old stomping grounds.

Now Jack; if you could just do something about the current exchange rate, like boost it to 50-1, we will be all set! B)

Take care,

Jason

I just did a 1 yr graph on XE and it made me sick. Steady fall almost non stop. Not quite free fall but maybe soon. At this time last year it was above 44 and now it\'s ready to hit the 40 mark. God help us all.

Well, I wish I could Jason, but I have my hands full getting this crazy community back together.   ;D

I'm baaack!  So's the SMF Forum!  You'll all notice some differences in appearance and what have you.  Give me a little time to make some changes and tweak a few things.  I've only been here for 5 minutes.   ;)

I see no Admin tab for me to get into the settings, so I'll have to contact Cebu for further settings changes so I can do my thing.  Bear with me all.

It's good to be back home!   8)

Well gang, we're back and operating under the latest version of SMF.  I still have a few things to work out and some boards to rearrange, but all is working as designed.

You will notice new posts by members you don't know.  These are not people, they're spam-bots.  No need to notify me of these posts, I'll be removing them on a regular basis until a few more settings are changed.  Do not respond to them.  Ignore them.

Thanks!

Hello Jaaaaaack.... I too am baaaaaaack  :)

Been missing in action for about a year... but nothing to do with forum changing from SMF.  Rather, just a bunch of personal bs that consumed a lot of my play time.

Nevertheless, I am delighted you have brought the "old" format back, because now I will never know that you ever changed it in the first place.

I look forward to visiting with you and "some" ;D of the old gang again... and hopefully a bunch of "new" gang that have signed on over the last year.

My thanks to you for all the hard work you do on behalf of the forum.

I agree that I am not your buddy, but that is not the way the post read. I am happy to be left out of your 'little circle of buddies' ::)

The 5616 figure you quote are not genuine members; it is free to join and most of these 'members' never posted and never returned, I doubt if there is more than a handful right now; not a very exclusive club.

Well, I guess I am wasting my time here, I will let the few of you that are left try to dig yourself out of the real mess that this forum has got into.

I helped start this forum and it would be sad to see it go down. There was a good crowd here in the early days but they have virtually all moved on. I will watch with interest to see if you can get it back on track.

Colin,

I always appreciate your posts with your home build and photographs on Flicker and now your new website of your Home Journal!
It's never a waste of your time! Many of the old time members have left, but Mr Lee and I have returned and new members are constantly joining! The 5616 members I quoted came from Jack, I was just using his reference even though I too don't see the other 5616 members postings, but only a handful as you mentioned! If you look at other old forums, that the number of members are also way up there!
So, don't give up the ship! As Mr Lee told me, treat all members on forums as friends so that misunderstandings and pissing contests don't occur too often!

Art, thanks for the appreciation, but I am getting a little tired of the word ‘negative’ used against my posts. Also there seems to be this ‘circle of buddies’ which seems to exclude outsiders, not a good thing on any forum. There is literally only a handful of people left on this forum, and being negative :P what is the attraction for others to come back? This forum has been going since 2006 and almost all the information that anyone would want is there readily available. It just leaves a social scene and general chat.

Those of us that have lived here for many years can share our experiences but not against a background of criticism. I have always been willing to help and even returned after being banned by an ex moderator for disagreeing with him outside the forum. I am very slowly generating a new super web site for the benefit of anyone who cares to read it, and it will not have a forum.

We had an all Brit meeting with the British Embassy staff last week and we met a number of other Brits living here in Puerto. I passed on my existing web site details and received some very favourable comments. There is obviously a need to spread around our knowledge and feel that independent ‘blogs’ could be a better way.

You know what Colin?  I seem to have gotten that feeling of the exclusive club you refer at times too and yes, I am a newbie as I have only been registered for a little over a year.  I have learned a great deal of information from here though during that time and during the year and half to two that I lurked.  Some of that information has come from things you have said.  And if that club exists, I still have learned from them too even though some of it is repetitious.  If they want to exclude though, so be it.  Sometimes I dwell on it but then I think, so what?  I don't need them.  But then in a previous post you say  "There was a good crowd here in the early days but they have virtually all moved on.  I will watch with interest to see if you can get it back on track."  So what does that mean?  Is there not a good crowd here now and we are a lost cause or did I just read that wrong?

I kind of like this forum a lot.  This is the only one I am a member of and I rarely read much of anything else on a couple of others.  I sure am not going to let a couple or a few people drive me off.

You have only got to look back over the last few weeks to see just how small the active membership is now. I did not realize that there was a ‘club’ on here until Art came up with his ‘circle of buddies’. That puts me on the outside, not a problem, but that does make it pointless to continue. During the first few years I used to learn a lot, there were many members all with different knowledge, experience and interests. I am not suggesting that the present members are ‘bad’, just that they have little to contribute that would interest me. For example, most of the Brits and Aussies have stopped posting leaving a strong US bias. I have got nothing against Americans, but as the saying goes ‘nations separated by a common language’, the number of times I have been misunderstood because of the difference in attitude and expression!

Is the forum a lost cause? possibly; there have been so many mistakes made recently, not by Jack, that have brought the forum down on its knees. For example, Kunena is a perfectly good forum that should have been sorted. In my opinion, changing back to SMF and introducing hundreds of spam messages would have hardly inspired confidence. I am sure Jack will sort it out, but is it too late?

I consider myself to be, basically, a contributor and happy to be that, but I am not prepared to tolerate having ‘negativity’ being thrown at me. I don’t need this forum and maybe it doesn’t need me.

Colin,

Don't misunderstand me, the "circle of buddies" I mentioned was only a handful of friends of mine back a few years ago and wasn't an "elite group or club" by any means to shut other members out as you may think! Jack, Tom, Bud, Chuck, Mr. Lee and myself are not in an "elite club" as my "Circle of Buddies" but are only forum friends is what I meant by it. They are just good acquaintances of mine on this forum and enjoy my chats with them for whatever the topic, therefore are my "Circle of Buddies" which also would include you even though I didn't mention your name in my OP, which I should have and sorry I didn't, because I didn't mean to leave you out in my post and make you feel like an outsider which you are not!
Your example as to the reason why most of the Brits and Aussies have stopped posting was due to a strong U.S. bias as you call it is just the nature of forums and also due to the cultural and attitude differences between Americans, Brits, Aussies and even Fil/Ams on this and other forums. I too experienced it on other forums which was often the reason I left and came back here when I noticed the attitude here had changed and those kinds of differences were no longer present like it was before which to me was a good change and now this forum Jack is trying to maintain is doing fine on it's own power and will pick up eventually with new members joining with the present members already here!
I myself get turned off by posts with negative and or sarcastic comments. It just turns people off and everyone should refrain from using those types of comments or remarks with an attitude on this or on any forum!
Some people may have just gotten out of the wrong side of the bed and their morning starts off with a negative mood and therefore they express their unwarranted negative comments without any thought of what was posted or if it offended the reader!
Members, old and new just have to have patience, think about what they are going to comment on and try to get along with others members!
This forum is not a "loss cause", far from it! Jack is doing a fine job managing it! Let's all help and keep on posting to help others! That's what forums are all about, helping new members to the Philippines and meeting those in person we get along with!

It was not intended as sacrcasm... just my feeble attempt at saying something nice to you, without being too mushy.  I actually thought that you would find my little jab at the 5,516 number - most of which are clearly missing in action on this Forum - as a little humorous.

Come on Colin, grin :D and enjoy it a little.  Most of the postings on all of the PI forums are just folks trying to enjoy themselves a little - and maybe share or pick up a little useful information along the way.

Dear Colin

Speaking as a Brit, I really enjoy your posts, you're the only one (I think) who lives in the paradise that is Palawan, and I would miss you very much.

And yes, there more Yanks than Brits or Aussies on here, but then there are 312 million of the buggers, 65 million of us Brits and 22m Aussies, and there is a strong Filipino connection to the US so I expect it to be honest.

Please stay, let's form a new clique  :)

You can easily change your screen name by clicking on "Profile" then "Account Settings".  There's a box to enter any name you wish.   I found out this can change your post stats as I discovered when I changed mine from graywolf to Gray Wolf.  At one time I had over 2000 posts.  Now it shows only a little over 200.  Not a biggie for me, but some may find it distressing.   :o    ;D

Thanks for the comments BC, I will be staying :) . I have exchanged emails with Jack and explained that, like him, I have also been a bit stressed out recently but for different reasons.

I have said a number of times, on this forum, that posts can be easily misunderstood without the essential body language. I try to follow the rule of preparing a post in Word then leaving it for many hours and then see if it could be misunderstood. The red pencil does often get used :) I would recommend others to do the same.

I am not too keen on the word 'paradise', Palawan is a pleasant place to live, and relatively inexpensive, but the tourists sites soon lose their attraction. I live ten minutes from Honda bay but have not been there for several years. Puerto Princesa is a rapidly growing City, less than one hour’s flight to Manila and Cebu, and Port Barton is said to become the next Boracay.

BC asked us to delete his account, Colin.  So he can't read your comments.   ;)

I am one of the newbie’s and I only have a few posts. Mostly I lurk, and read. I have many questions about living in the Philippines and I find that if I pay attention most of my questions are answered before I even knew I had one. Other questions will pop up and I’ll ask them here. I like this forum mush better than the message board, a lot less junk and of course, the proverbial pissing contest.
I have noticed a few post that look to be a bit sarcastic but I chalk that up to me not understanding what the original posting was that it was in reply to. I have never seen the types of replies here that I see on the message boards.
All you old guys are a store house of much information, and I mean that term as “been in the Philippines a long time.” Old guys like me who are planning our move needs old guys like you, so be sure to hang around.
I like to joke and kid around and sometimes my jokes land with a splat, like an over ripe plum, but they are meant to be harmless. If I like people I like to joke with them, if I don’t like them I ignore them. So if your name pops up in a joke that means you are considered a nice guy. No offense intended.
Colin’s idea of writing the post and looking at it for a while before hitting the button makes very good sense. The only problem with that is I know what it is intended to mean and the reader might miss the clue. So if ever I post something that causes a problem, let me know and I’ll try very hard to either clarify what I meant, or withdraw it and apologize.

Hi John,

Get your feet wet and just jump right in anytime with your questions and or update us with your plans and purposed adventures here in the Philippines!
You have a good attitude about you and I'll take your word for it when you said, "So if ever I post something that causes a problem, let me know and I’ll try very hard to either clarify what I meant or withdraw it and apologize". I like that! Everyone on this forum should be like you John, which 98% already are! ???

It implied to our little circle of buddies out of the other 5616 members from the original forum of a few years ago, that a few of us left and returned recently! They know who they are! Sorry if you feel left out!

One thing to attract members, one is the job hunting ads... Second, as long as the poster is not a pain in the ass, not making any trouble at all, avoid banning.

Jack...Good to see the SMF back alive and well. Very good (Maayu Gid).

Colin...Although you & I sometimes have disagreements, I have always respected you and hope you stick around.

Again Jack, well done and good to be back with SMF. God Bless.....

Hi kapatid!  Hoy!  You don't waste time, do you?  You just jump right in!  Hahahaha!   :D

First, about ads, we do not allow ads on the Forum.  None.  Never. Period.

And as far as how and when I ban someone, believe me,  take no pleasure in doing that (most of the time)and I do that only when someone is being a pain or abuses the privilege of posting here.  Also, commercial spammers, whose sole intention is to advertise their products, are banned immediately, no questions, no if's and's or but's.  Our Forum is here to provide information, not to sell someone else's products or services.

If one of our members wishes to sell something we recommend they place an ad with Sulit or with buyandsellPh.com where they would have a much larger audience.

I hope this makes sense to you, kapatid, and look forward to many more interesting thoughts from you.   :)
