Title: Fire
Post by: BingColin on March 08, 2013, 05:17:15 PM
Our helper saw smoke in the distance and we watched the wind take it well to our left, but then it caught the cogon grass in the large field behind us. A big panic with hoses and buckets of water to wet the other side of our bamboo fence and nipa hut. It got to within about 20 metres of the side and back when the fire brigade turned up. They said it started in a slaughter house way in the distance and destroyed over 35 hectares of mainly grassland. We are going out tomorrow to buy a strimmer and cut ourselves a firebreak well around the outside of the fence.  I think our proposed hollow block wall needs to be moved up on our to-do list.

Colin,

Glad you are all okay.  Agree on moving the wall build up. ;)

That had to be a gut wrenching feeling to see wildfire coming that close to your house!  It would be a very good idea to maintain a clear area around the perimeter wall to prevent burning embers from being more easily blown over the walls.

I'm glad no one was hurt!

Colin,
Forget about the fire wall! I'll let you borrow my giraffe to be your lookout. He can also swim like an elephant so no need to worry about shipping him over on a ferry there to Palawan!
I know, you want an elephant, because they can uproot your unwanted trees around your property! Sorry, I don't have an elephant!
