Title: First Impressions, Davao and beyond.....
Post by: Bill on November 14, 2010, 01:19:45 AM
:)  I\'ve been in Davao for nearly 4 days now and the PH for almost a week.  I\'ve read a few negative posts here and my experience (the Great Lost Bags Cebu Pacific Airlines fiasco aside) has been wholly positive.  I find I like the Tricycles a lot, but the Jeepneys less only because my 6\'2\" frame places my head up against the roof in the Jeepneys and thus my vision is very restricted.  I like to see outside when I am traveling, so Jeepneys don\'t please me only for that reason.  You sure can\'t beat the price.

I have 3rd world travel experience all over Central America, Eastern Europe and some parts of Asia.  My most recent experience has been in Eastern Europe, primarily Romania.  So, I guess it\'s only natural that I draw comparisons between the two countries.  By far and away, the PH is much cleaner and has far less trash lying about than Romania.  For some reason that surprised me, but I like it.  I am curious that trash cans are always hard to find, yet litter well contained.  That speaks well of the people I think.

As I expected, the people have been very friendly, no one has tried to pick my pocket or slit my throat, what\'s to complain about?   :)

My travel radius is expanding every day, I\'ll report if things change over time.  For now, I\'m very happy I came and wish I\'d come years ago.

Regards,

Bill

Bill, thanks for the good report.   8)  I\'m glad you didn\'t let the Cebu Pacific incident cloud your outlook.  You\'re right, so many people comment negatively but I have come to the conclusion that they are probably negative about everything in life.   :(  Those with a positive outlook will generally have a positive experience.   ;)  I look forward to hearing more about your travels throughout the RP.   ;D

Speaking of realistic (and head in the clouds  :P) Bill, what airline did you fly over on? I\'m 6\'2 with a large frame and I\'m sort of concerned with airline seats... I notice that most airlines that fly direct to manila are asian airlines (China, Korea, and Philippine Air specifically) and I\'m wondering (hoping) that they have American sized seats. Yes? No? And how was the flight over?

I envy you, and everybody else that is over there already. Have a great time! Looking forward to more updates!

Chasereo,

I am also 6\'2\' and was pushing 300 lbs in June on my flight over.  Flew China Airlines from San Francisco-Taipei-Manila one way ticket.  Couple of hour lay over in Taipei very nice modern airport(short walk between arrival terminal and departure terminal all in side). Seating was more than adequate and great food for an airline. Stewardesses were attentive and plane was well maintained on the interior.  Would use them again if traveling.

Ask for an emergency exit seat, at least there is more leg room. Or pony up for business class and have your own bed  ;D

You are an inch or 2 taller and I find it unberable to fly that far without a first class upgrade.

DELTA (/NWA) is here - start getting your friends to donate miles to you... 100% allowable with Delta you will need about 30k miles to upgrade to 1st class.

Emergency exit seats suck since they are normally by restrooms and everybody stands there waiting in line. Plus the food table is terrible. I try to book aisle seat with no one in other two seats or minimum one in window  seat.  Then I have plenty of room to stretch.

I flew Asiana airlines to Clark.  No complaints, except the flight attendants didn\'t speak much English and I had to be very careful in communicating my needs.  I found writing them notes helped a lot.  I got up and went to the head early in the flight, when I came back, the book I was reading was gone!  The two Korean guys next to me claimed ignorance, the American guy sitting behind me looked guilty to me, but denied having my book.  So, I did the rest of the flight san book.  After we landed in Seoul the American guys gf gave me back my book, saying she just \"found it.\"  I was glad to get it back, it\'s a great book, but sure missed it during the flight.  I spent most of my time watching Korean movies because they are captioned in English.  Most were very good!

The Jeepneys here are hard on me due to my height.  I can\'t see hardly anything.  Tends to be disorientation, but I manage.  The Tricycles are a scream, love them.  Not sure why though.  LOL

I for one enjoy travelling by jeepney, tricycle and pedal powered bicycle, and the long distance coaches. So much better an experience than taxis for being in the real Philippines. Of course I am just a visitor at the moment (4th time next month) but I suppose if you are in a hurry, or live there permanently it is different. And unlike you Bill I am only 5\'6\", so fit rather better! I generally try to sit at the back so I can look out the back, but I have noticed that when I do I am often breathing strong diesel exhaust fumes. Not a problem for a visitor but I wonder what my lungs would be like if I lived there. Studies done on jeepney drivers and air quality in general in Manila do not make for happy reading.

My brother in law used to be a tricycle owner/driver  in his local town, but had to stop when he had respiratory problems.

Emergency seats I use are in the centre of the plane and NOWHERE NEAR restrooms  - my only trouble is getting them!
But get them I do at every opportunity

It\'s nice to know that there are some other big guys on this forum that I can ask questions to that a person of smaller stature may not understand or relate to! I\'m 6\'2 265 by the way.

Bill, sorry I hijacked your thread! Didn\'t mean to! haha!

I\'m 6\'5\" (289ish??) and I have to say I found the Tricycles much more difficult with respect to getting in/out and being hunched over. . .

:)  I\'ve been in Cebu for a week now.  I was very fortunate to get great accommodations here, which I give a 5 star rating to.  It has made my stay here a very pleasant one!  Thank You Rod!!

My initial view of Cebu was pretty negative.  In order to get anywhere on the Island from the airport you have to go through some barrio areas that are not the best.  In Davao these conditions were rarely seen.  There was more litter, the people more destitute.  Not the scene you\'d want to put on a tourist advertisement, but perhaps a more accurate reflection of life here.

Perhaps too this is a reflection of Cebu being a larger city than Davao, I\'m not sure.  Since my arrival, I\'ve done a little traveling around, not as much as I would have liked, but enough to give me a better feel for the city.  It\'s larger, so there is more poverty.  It\'s more industrial, so there is more pollution.  All in all, not a bad place though.

Next stop Luzon.  Should be interesting.

Regards,

Bill

You need to go for a drive or over nighter. Things change drastically when you travel out of the city, even a 30 minute boat ride will make you think you are in Paradise. Cebu City is a good central hub to station at if you need the things a big city requires. If i can figure out how to manage economically i would live in a smaller town for sure.
