Post by: Gray Wolf on February 23, 2013, 09:09:51 AM
Here's our travel agent's email and contact info.  If any of you decide to give her a try, be sure to tell her that her Kuya Jack Bishop and Ate Glo in Louisville referred you.   ;) :)

If you mention our names up front and say we referred you, you'll get a "special" price.   :)   I'd say somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 less than the prices shown on Expedia for the same flight, depending on which airline you choose and the date of your flight.  Seriously.   :)

I use Expedia to compare prices because they list all airlines and you can compare pricing, flight time, layovers, etc.  After determining which airline and flight time I'd like to shoot for, I then call May and check on their "specials".  One year we got talked out of flying Northwestern and into flying Korean Air instead.  That was the cleanest airplane I've ever flown on!  The service was great, food was great, we had interactive screens for each passenger allowing us to choose what movie we watched and when we watched them (no big screens at bad angles showing "chick flicks").  Plus she saved us about $500 each ticket versus flying with Northwest (2006).  Our trip in 2011 we saved over $300 for each ticket, totaling almost $1000 in savings overall for 3 tickets.

It's worth a phone call or email just to compare prices.  No guarantees, but better than advertised prices.

When I went to the Philippines I looked at several airline websites. Since it was going to take more than one airline to get from North Carolina to Cebu I tried to juggle the times around to make connections without having a huge layover. I finally gave up and looked at Priceline. I picked one and went with it. Flew United from Greensboro to DC and then from DC to Tokyo then JAL from Tokyo to Manila. I had to buy a separate ticket on Cebu Pacific to get to Cebu. The only problem I had was the airport in Manila. I had heard that that airport was bad and wanted to miss it but every flight I looked at came into Manila all at the same time. No matter where the flight started from, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Shanghai or Guangzhou the plane landed in Manila at 10:30 pm local time.
The planes were fine, Both United and JAL planes had TV screens in the back of the seats in front and there was a choice of 5 movies. Since the flight from DC to Tokyo was 14 hours long I watched all 5. Two chick flicks, 2 action movies and one spooky movie ďSixth SenseĒ it was the best one.
When we got to Manila there was 9 big jumboís all coming in at the same time. I donít like big crowds and this was one huge mob, from the gate all the way to the exit door. Customs was a mad house. I am determined to never go through Aquino Airport again, even if I have to take a boat.
I have since found several airlines that will allow me to skip Manila and fly directly to Cebu. The leading contender right now is Cathay Pacific. Iíll fly something from Charlotte to the west coast, say San Fran or LAX then fly Cathay Pacific to Cebu via Hong Kong.
I know Iíll have to fly into Aquino several times if I stay in the Philippines for the rest of my life but Iíll be going through the domestic airport not the international one. Although I think itís in the same airport there is a big difference in the terminals and the people that work in them. The people on the domestic side were some of the nicest people I ever met.
I got there around midnight and there were no planes out until 5:30 in the morning. Since I didnít have a ticket they wouldnít let me wait inside in the cool air. A cop carried my bag and led me up the street to a 24 hour travel agency I got a ticket. Then he carried my bag back down to the terminal and inside and picked out a cool section of the floor for me to wait.

I may go the travel agency route next time and let them do the juggling, so long as they let me miss Manila

I agree WB!  We used Korean Air in 2006 and I could not imagine being in an airliner that was so clean and one that had such sweet, intelligent flight attendants who seemed genuinely pleased to take special requests!  I noticed that they also had a large crew so that you didn't have to wait long for anything.  They moved right along and always with a beautiful smile.  I'm a sucker for gorgeous Asian girls with big smiles and sparkling eyes.   ;D
Their food was delicious and plentiful and there seemed to be no limit on drinks, but I didn't push it.  I was in a nice state of mind the entire flight.  Only drawback was a long layover in Seoul, but it was very nice, clean and comfortable there with food concessions, newstand, gift shops and large western style CR's.   :)   We're seriously considering flying Korean Air this year, unless someone has a deal we can't pass up.

I agree with everything that has been said about Korean Air.  In my opinion, of the ones I have tried, they are the best.  A couple of the others are decent but, the U.S. owned/operated ones usually stink it up.  When I have used them, I only had to deal with Delta between Jax and Atlanta.  Then KA from Atlanta to Seoul to Manila and everything the same on return.

I read somewhere that they traveled the country and recruited the tallest, prettiest, most intelligent girls from all over South Korea to be Flight Attendants and serve as ambassadors of Korean culture and class.
They all looked like Miss Universe contestants to this old boy!  WooHoo!   :D

But the most important thing of course, is a very professional flight crew, well maintained aircraft and good weather.  We had all the above!

I just checked yesterday and they are currently using the Airbus 380-800 for the Atlanta-Seoul leg of the trip.  I'm looking forward to flying in that gorgeous airliner!

I used to fly National during 70s and until they went out or merged or whatever it was and they were very good.  My very first flight ever in a commercial airliner was with them.  I remember how friendly and pretty the stewardesses were on that first flight.  I flew American from Chicago to Tokyo, in I guess it was February of 2012.  I swear I think my eyes were deceiving me because all the female stews on that American flight last year I believe were the same crew that were on my first flight when I went to boot on National back in January of 73.

Prices on line so far are between $1700-$2000 per ticket.

For anyone living on the Esat Coast near NYC, Cathy Pacific has non-stop to Hong Kong with less than two hour layover for connection to Manila. I used that routing once wasn't too bad. The flight from JFK-HGK is 16 hours and I was getting pretty restless and needed to walk the isles about three quarters into the flight.

Well, I hope my travel agent comes through then because she quoted us about $1300 through Korean Air.  When we get confirmation, which should be next week, I'll give an update on the price.  We're just waiting for their next block of tickets.  We're shooting for a late November wheels-up with a return leg the first week of January.  If everything goes well, I'll be celebrating Christmas with the family!
WooHoo!   :D :) :)

I understand.  We've been searching and asking about tickets, but must wait until our consolidator gets her next contract and block of tickets before we can confirm the price.  But she said she believed the price would stick.  Now after December 1st the prices go way up due to the holiday travel season, so we made sure to ask for a flight before Thanksgiving.

If anyone else is looking for tickets contact May and tell her that Jack and Gloria Bishop referred you.  She's a very nice young lady!

Gray Wolf, just wanted to say thank you for the contact at Skybird (May).  My wife and I are retiring and moving to the PIs.  She will be going the 21st of July with our niece and two dogs.  We had been having a lot of trouble finding a "good" ticket price at that time plus we kept running into travel agents that figured selling a ticket was all they needed to do.

I gave my wife May's contact information and she got in touch.  My wife wanted me to tell everyone that the service and attention she got was outstanding.  A pleasant, helpful agent, not to mention a good price plus May went the extra mile and called the airline for pet reservations.

When I finally get to go around the first part of September, you can count on me giving May a call .

I'm very pleased to hear that you were happy with her service!

We have our E-tickets!  Sorry I didn't inform everyone sooner, but I've been plagued with computer issues for a week.   I got my new Asus laptop yesterday and so far it's been smooth sailing.

Wheels up on November 27 with a return flight on January 8th, 2014.  We didn't get the price we originally were quoted, but it was close enough.  Round trip with Korean Air, $1466.  We fly out of Louisville, via American Airlines to Dallas-Fort Worth, then hop on Korean Air for our flight to Seoul and change planes for the final leg to Manila, arriving at 10:15PM.

The Korean Air legs of the trip will be aboard a Being 777-200 for the long flight, then a Boeing 777-300 for the Seoul/Manila leg.  Both of these airframes are new and have the latest ergonomically designed seats with interactive screens for each passenger.  I will be able to choose from about 40 movies that I can watch when I choose.  No "big screen" movies with other people's heads in the way.   :)

I'm looking forward to interacting with the lovely Korean flight attendants.  I'll try to get a photo of me with a couple of them sometime during our flight that I can share with the group.

When we first arrive in Manila we'll spend the night in one of the hotels and then head out to the family abode the next morning after a shower and a good night's sleep in air/con.  Then we'll be off to Novaliches to settle in with the family.

I will arrange a day or two when I can go to the SM Fairview mall and meet up with some of you guys who live locally.  I will also put together a trip to Cebu for a couple of days and will meet some of you there at Mooons Cafe.  I don't have a date for any of these meetings yet, so we'll play that by ear when the time comes.  I have several places to visit while in country, including a trip to Buguey and the family farm there in the Cagayan Valley.  All of our side trips will depend on weather conditions and money.  If both hold out, I'll be hopping all around the islands and hope to see some of you when I venture close to your home turf.

Good on you Jack! You and good lady Glo sound all organized for a wonderful trip fella. And you have a new computer also. It's all happening fella! Btw we bought an ASUS laptop a month or so ago also. Ours is a mid-range K52F with a 15.8" HD-LED screen and an excellent built-in Altec Lansing SRS sound system. If yours performs anything like ours has so far, it's certain you'll be happy with your choice Jack. Asus apparently come with an extensive 12 month warranty so seem confident in the quality of their products. But, in our experience, Asus has tended to load the machine up with all sorts of additional third-party software, but it's been easy enough to delete most of the more useless examples of this additional 'bonus' software quite readily. Haha.

Anyway, fella .. sure, there's plenty of time before you hit the sunny shores of the Phils, but I know we Palawan crew here won't forgive you if you two don't get yourselves over to this island while you're in the Phils again this time around mate. Don't listen to that Mindanao crowd. Just because they grow the best coffee beans available anywhere, well, so what? You wait till you try our fresh cashews, and also regarding a good feed, 80% of Manila's seafood comes from our pristine waters, if the Chinese don't end up poaching it all. So, don't forget our pretty little island in your travels Jack, you hear?  :D

Cheers Jack & Glo

Thanks Stephen!  I got the ASUS K55A model with 15.6 inch HD LED screen.  Mine came with an assortment of extra software too, much of which has already been uninstalled, especially the McAfee AV program.  Yuck!  :P

There has been some talk of a family outing to Palawan, but I have no details yet.  But rest assured that if we do come that way I'll let you guys know so we can meet up in town for some tucker and cold drinks.   :)

Looking foward to it.  Ahhh B777 good airplane except those in San Francisco who might think otherwise now.

From preliminary reporting it appears it was pilot error.  He apparently came in short and clipped the jetty at the waters edge.  If you look at Google Earth images of San Fran airport, it sticks out into the bay with several approaches right up to the edge of the water.

We'll be flying Korean Air, some of the best pilots around.  No fear here!   :) 8)

I am also going to be flying a 777 from Seattle to Seuol and on to Cebu, Asiana Air no less. First time in history I bought a returnable ticket and I am considering exercising that option.

Jack, when you get your Cebu trip planned let us know. I'll find a way to get there from Toledo. Should my plane make it all the way I should be well acclimated by then.

Will do, bro!   :)   C'mon across the mountains to Cebu!

I'm thinking of meeting for lunch at the Mooon Cafe in Ayala Mall.  That should be easy for everyone to find.  Once I set the date for my flight to Cebu, I'll let you guys know.

The first round is on me!!   :D
