Nice fotos Colin.  I like the third one.  Very beautiful!

One of the reason I love the RP so and am so looking forward to being there full time is the flora.  It\'s always so green and pretty.  I have always found Bouganvillea to be very gwapa also.  The flowers of the RP are almost as pretty as a Pilipina.  Almost.   ;D

Hi Colin

Yes it was me who posted orchid pics on Sunday, and now they\'ve gone and disappeared! Hopefully the powers-that-be will get them back, though. Love your photos as well. In fact that is one way I am jealous of you living in Palawan. It seems to be the best spot in the islands for natural beauty. Do you also have spectacular butterflies as well? and birds?

I have also got some photos of some very unusual Bouganvillea plus other flowers, I will post them some other time. We have a lot 100 metres deep, so when we eventually get the house built, I plan to grow Bouganvillea down one side and Orchids under a covered walkway down the other side.

There are two Orchid nurseries just north of Manila that offer packs of plants and will deliver worldwide. Can\'t rememder the addresses but Google search should find them. There is a Butterfly garden here in Puerto princesa, I have not been there yet but it is on the list for some photographs. There is a man that occasionally sells pinned and framed Buterflies here in the town, I don\'t know where he gets them from. You see occasional Butterflies in the provinces, but not too many Birds. I think they get caught and eaten  :(

Oh dear, mutter mutter, all that literary erudition to be remembered.
As it\'s you...

I think it would be good to have a section where folk could post pics of their prize blooms or indeed any interesting flowers they come across.

Here are some photos of our orchids. We are not experts in their cultivation by any means, but we are quite good at buying them! If anyone can help with botanical names for them or cultivation hints I would be grateful. I would like to post pictures of butterflies, moths and birds, but they won\'t keep still.

John, absolutely breathtaking!  The colors are so vivid.  They look so fragile that if I were to see them in person I would only whisper around them so as not to damage them.  Beautiful.  So glad you reposted.

Thank you, Greg. Unfortunately, like most things beautiful and delicate they tend to ration their bounty. Onced they\'ve bloomed you don\'t get another for many months, at least I don\'t. So any tips on cultivation greatly appreciated. We do the obvious like putting them under dappled shade.

While we are doing mutual admiration, I thought your post on the dangers of the onion family was hysterical, the best humour I have read on here. :D :D :D

I don\'t know much about Orchid culture either, but I believe some only seem to bloom once a year. The ones in our garden bloomed this year for the first time, and out of about a dozen in the garden in Manila only one bloomed in the year we were there. When we went to the Orchidarium in Manila around March, there was very little in bloom and they told us to come back in July/August.

Typical innit. You double a bloke\'s salary and he gets power-mad, move this here, move that there... ::)

Anyway, Colin, thanks for that. I feel slightly less incompetent, now. Seems there are two main types, which I call broad and narrow leaved. The narrow leaved seem to bloom frequently but the more spectacular broad leaved ones are parsimonious, as you suggest.

I did my best to capture the beauty around me wherever I went.  It is amazing how much color there is if you look.  Here are a few pics from our last trip.  I never realized until now, but lavender must be a very common color.  This one was growing in my sister\'s doorway.

(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/th_Orchid.jpg) (http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/Orchid.jpg)

This one was growing behind the water pump.

(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/th_Orchid2.jpg) (http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/Orchid2.jpg)

This one was up on the roof terrace

(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/th_Orchid3.jpg) (http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/Orchid3.jpg)

And this one along the pathwalk on the way to the tricycle pilaan.

(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/th_Orchid4.jpg) (http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g63/graywolf101/Orchid4.jpg)

There were also many bushes growing alongside the pathwalk and even these had flowers popping out of them.

Mr. Graywolf, also very nice and very beautiful fotos.  Orchids.  Like a Pilipina.  Beautiful and yet  fragile.  Handle with utmost care.

I seem to remember a Tagalog song called Bulaklak (Flower).

Thanks Jack.

Marie

Good to see you posting again. Do you ever cross the border to Holland and visit the tulip fields in spring? Probably the best bulaklaks in the world.

Here are a couple more. An orchid that is not lilac,

(http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg61/johnamendall/Flowers%20of%20Philippines/th_lesatemiratesFeb081500.jpg) (http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg61/johnamendall/Flowers%20of%20Philippines/lesatemiratesFeb081500.jpg)

And this thing was enormous, if you are used to British butterflies and moths. It must have been 6 inches across the wingtips. I wonder if it was an Atlas Moth, the largest there is.

Thanks John, nice shots. Yes, been there for a couple of times and took a lot of photos. But I was having computer problem before and all those great Holland buwak/bulak photos are gone.  I will surely go back there to meet those lovely flowers again.  But it\'s not Philippine flowers ha.  So I guess I can\'t post it here.

Anyway, here\'s gumamela/hibiscus we have a lot of like this in Philippines with different colors red, yellow, pink & white, sometimes a combination of red & white or red & yellow.

Its the first time I have posted any photos. It took me long enough to work out how to get it below 150. If using photoshop what do you suggest optimum settings for posting is.

MC,

Pictures should be 150kb or less & size should be roughly 800 x 600.  If you use PhotoBucket as your source, pics will be automatically resized when you use the clickable thumbnail option.  Or at least that\'s the rumor.   ;D

If you are using Photoshop, first reduce the size to no more than 800 on the longest side then use File>Save for Web and Devices, you then choose the smallest picture that looks OK. This option does strip the exif data but that is not important for posting to the forum. However, I would recommend using Photobucket, it is a lot easier and instructions are in the Photo board.

Facebook doesn\'t allow you to post a link to that particular page in your account.  We don\'t have \"permission\" from them to do so.  Try posting the pics separately or using a different album link that is available to the public, like Picasa.   :)

Hi Jack, it depends on the FB account\'s access settings. If the link was for a post set to public then all can see it. If set for friends only then you must be on their friends list. Any other setting and no access. God Bless...

Steve,

You may be right, but were you (or anyone) able to see the pictures?  I tried and was blocked, hence my statement about not having access.

I\'m aware of FB settings, but if your account is set up so that the general public can access your account, you are in for a big surprise when some hacker grabs your personal info for nefarious purposes.   ;)

You can set access levels either across the board or on individual items.

Just tried it. Nope. It must be restricted to their friends only. Them changing the picture album access to public will correct it. The trick however is to get them to do that. I, myself have mine restricted. God Bless.....

And that\'s as it should be for anyone who has FaceBook, especially in light of the revelation recently that their entire database had been hacked.

The best thing would be for le0n to download Picasa, free software from Google.  With Picasa you can create online albums to share with whomever you want.  Even \"guests\" can view them, if le0n sends the link.

le0n, you out there buddy?  Hello le0n!   ;D

Graham,

I deleted the errant post.   ;)    If you get a chance to speak with Leon, give him my best.

Here are two links that everyone should know about as they both make it easier to post photos and albums:

Picasa is a free program made available by Google I use it to create photo albums and store almost all my photos as backup.  http://picasa.google.com/ (http://picasa.google.com/)  It\'s the best photo album program I\'ve used.

The other is Photobucket.  http://photobucket.com/ (http://photobucket.com/)  I use Photobucket to store and create links for individual photos for posting on the Forum.  It allows me to create code links that convert to clickable thumbnails, and full-size images.  The photos are stored online allowing us as members of the Forum to see photos linked to albums you create.

Share these with Leon for me Graham.
