My suggestion is to go to the local LTO office in the Phils and just show them your Aussie license and tell them you'd like a local license also. Not sure how that will work but I've been here 4 years on tourist visa and showed them my license from Michigan and was given a license to drive everything but the commercial trucks here in the Phils.

Maybe it's just because it is a provincial office, but foreign licenses are given a lot of weight.

I did have my ACR I-Card.  That might have some impact on it also.

Just to be clear Joe, you managed to obtain a local license based on your foreign license even though you are on a tourist visa??   From what I have read on here and other forums, you need a visa that is valid for at least 12 months to be able to obtain a local license.  Didn't realize that you could have an ACR I-Card on a tourist visa.

Yes, you can get an ACR I-card on a tourist visa.  In fact, believe it's required under the 6 month extension via tourist visa.  I think if you stay longer than 2 months the ACR I-card is required. So really, any extension after the 2 months requires the card.

I was here over a few months before I went to get the license.  Do NOT let that license expire if your foreign license is expired.  I made that mistake and had to go through a class here.  A 4 hour waste of a good Saturday.  And you need to stay awake as they teach what each sign means.  That was about all they taught.  Then again, I was almost a sleep through most of it.  But you cannot take the test until you go to that class.  So, there's that.

Not sure how important that was.  I do live in the province and stuff is VERY lax here.

Yes after 2 months on a 9a(tourist visa) it is required to get an ACR-I card.  Having an ACR-I card does not guarantee you can get a license, last year LTO changed the policy.  You now must have a visa that shows one year remaining on your stay in the Philippines and you must have been here for a month before you can apply for an initial Philippine drivers license.  So you need an SRRV, 13 series. PRV, etc to get a license.  I got a license last year after the policy took effect, but got turned down at the 1st office I tried.  Now if you already have a Philippine license and renew the 1 year does not apply.  This being the Philippines you might get a license at one LTO office but you also might be denied. :o
