Here\'s more recent data, straight from the CIA.
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2001rank.html

The PI is between Switzerland and Nigeria. Seems about right.

Yo, WFOX11, we prefer RP (Republika ng Pilipinas)  not PI.

Thanks friend!

OK, I\'ll remember that. Thank you for enlightening me.

Not really sure I understand Uzi\'s question, but I\'ll give it a shot. Let me attempt translation: How could the RP be so high in the GDP ranking with such a high proportion of its population in poverty? I can think of two reasons. The endemic corruption is a huge \'leak\' in the economy. It\'s as if a large percentage of the economy gets funneled off into another dimension which can\'t be measured by conventional methods.

Secondly, it could be that the few families which control most of the economy are raking in a lot more than has been previously suspected.

RP

PI

Why so touchy on an acronym?  Is spelling going to be next?

What is slang to one might well be very normal to another.  Are we that PC out here?

Aww now, Big Bird, don\'t get all bent out of shape, ol\' buddy.   ;)   ;D ;D

Using the links you provided, PI is more closely linked with Politically Incorrect or Private Investigator, while RP lists Republic of the Philippines as the second most likely acronym.

Y\'all can call it anything you like, as far as this old hillbilly is concerned, but PI can have different meanings and is quite often misinterpreted, besides being outdated.  Just my humble opinion and no offense was meant nor did I mean to sound like I was being bossy towards wfox11.   ::)

Now, ya\'ll have a great day now, y\'hear?    8)

It has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with being polite to our hosts.

As Jack has previously stated, RP is for Republika ng Pilipinas.  That\'s the name of the country.

PI stands for Philippine Islands, which is how they were named during the American occupation of the country so it does carry quite a negative connotation with some Pinoy\'s.

And no, it\'s not ok to say \"Phils\" either.  It\'s RP or Philippines.  Or even Pilipinas.

By the way, you\'re spelling seems to pass muster quite well.   ;)

When they call to me \'Hey Joe\' are they polite?  (yes - usually) That is left over from old war days too.  Should I jump their arse with a lecture on how to properly call out to an American?  Dong!  Hey Dong!  Just like PI is left over from those days too.  There is no harm or malice intent in the delivery so how can it be so wrong?  It is known slang.  It is not derogatory.  Just like the other person who meant no harm.

Besides, my wife says we all talk slang English.

Are they insulting me then each time they say it to me?

What is the proper name of our country for this forum?  Which term/s is acceptable today (on this board)?  US.....USA.....America...United States of America.....evil devil dogs.......

More words or acronyms you can not say in public to be added to my Kentucky white boy hillbilly dictionary.  Bwhahahahahaha

I hate to upset you, but in my circle of guys married to these ladies all use that term and many more too.  Now the other references like Bing and Tree Creatures are insulting.  But they are also all learned from military service to this fine country.

I guess it is a good thing you are not in charge of forum etiquette out here and just another in the mix of a sea of many different type of folks from many different walks of life.

I do respect your opinion.  Just don’t think I have to follow it.

Thank the heavens for spell check too!

How about that \'Yo!\' part of the message? Acceptable slang way to greet to some maybe.......

I guess you\'re talking to me, sir, since you quoted some of the words I used.   Well, to use a phrase from one of my favorite comedians, Steve Martin...

\"Well, excuuuuuse, ME!\"   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Lighten up Big Bird.  It\'s all in fun, my friend.   8)   There are no \"Forum Police\" here, nor do we insist on people using the correct term/acronym for the Republic of the Philippines.  Be as incorrect as you please, but lighten up, please.

Thanks, y\'all!

And when they do say \"Hey Joe!\"  I respond with \"Hoy pare!  Wassup!\"  Then they laugh, I laugh and we smile at each other.  The next time they see me they say \"Hoy Pare!\" or \"Good afternoon Kuya Jack!\"   :)

The \"Yo\" part should have been a clue to you that I wasn\'t being really serious.  Those who have been around this forum since it\'s beginning know I can be and have been extremely serious.  You\'ll know it when I am.  If I start off by saying something silly like \"Yo\" or something similar that\'s the first indication I\'m not about to ban you from the forum.   ;)

Wow…what’s happening to us? ??? ???

I agree with all of you…Big Bird, Jack, Greg , Keith, Michael, Graham, Stillbilly, Rufus…those I’ve forgot, but is it the “water”, is it the “smoke”…is it too much Viagra? Or lack thereof? :o

OK, so it is politically correct: It is the Republic of the Philippines. My Wife is a Teacher, her two best friends are teaches and they call where they live and sometimes even what they teach the simply Philippines. And according to what lesson book they are currently are using have called it at times, the Philippine Islands, the Commonwealth of the Philippines, the Philippine Island Group?, and yes the Republic of the Philippines.

Where are our Jokes and Laughter and quotes from our woman regarding this issue gone to? Where, right where they should be they have more important things to take care of…in taking care of each one of us to care what the lot of us right or wrong care to prove we are right or heaven forbid (sorry Colin) wrong about the issue.  ;D ;D

As for me I’m coming Home soon, to live with the invading Muslims in the most dangerous city in the 7000 plus chain of islands. I am coming home with full intent of living my life in peace and security. I know very well how to when in Rome, etc… ;)

Murf, Colin, Rufus, John, Ray,

The posts that were, shall we refer to them as philosophical, did not belong in this thread. I have split them & placed as a new topic in \'Contributions by Members\' under \'Ponderings\'. Not sure if that is the best place but best I could think of. I have renamed it as \'Life, the Universe & Everything.

Big Bird, Hi,

The letters PI have a rather nasty connotation attached to them. Its not the fact that it\'s now called the RP. If you want me to let you know what it is contact me via PM. I would not be allowed by the moderators here to give you the literal translation.

Well, the modies have edited my post ... Now for some reason the accronym \"PI\" is not acceptable either.

I am new here to this board, but I sure have noticed that members have to be very very carefull of what they post. And I am not talking about posting smut or barfine stories, etc ... but just ordinary stuff that we encounter living here on a daily basis. Come on ... As much as I enjoy living here, this place has many negative aspects to it ... and for someone that has not figured that out by now, maybe you never will. Is there any reason at all that everything we talk about here has to be sugar coated pretty pink? ... This board is not run by the Philippines Tourist Association is it? ... I had thought it was a board where we could share info ... good and bad about living in this country ... and there is alot of info that can be learned by a new guy just thinking about making the move over here.

There is one thing to be \"politically correct\", but just to over monitor this board to the extent that the members have little or no say other than to post the positives is just not right in my opinion. For anyone actually thinking about living here in the RP ... I sure hope he is presented with both the good and bad about this place before he ever makes that big decision to sell eveything he owns and but a ticket over here for good. That\'s a fact!

BTW ... This place has been called the PI for as long as I can remember, and I have been coming here since the mid 70s. Folks, you can dream up as many meanings for \"PI\" as you want, but the fact remains is that is short for \"Philippine Islands\". In fact, I know many many Filipinos that use the term \"PI\" when referring to the Republic of the Philippines ... Jeeze, they even have a bank over here called The \"Bank of the Philippine Islands\" (aka: BPI) Sure, calling it \"RP\" is correct, but does our posts have to be edited just because they say \"PI\"?

Now, I guess I will get banned for speaking out ... But, I don\'t think I have stated anything in this post that has not been thought by some other members of this board.

Thank\'s for at least understanding what I have attempted to say.

Ron,
Out of Stock Sir !

Ron,

Ron,

Sorry but I don\'t get any of what you said. The only thing that was edited was the link you posted and the reason was explained. Every other word you wrote is as written.

On this forum, if we think something is wrong we discuss it. Things are not \'sugar coated\' as you put it. There are many, many posts pointing out negatives of living here. Your post on corruption is still here, not edited & you haven\'t been banned. So what are you complaining about?

As for using PI instead of RP is that so difficult? It is just a point of respect for our adopted country & most think we should make that simple effort. It isn\'t a pre-requisite of being a member, it is a polite request.

Give examples of this over monitoring you refer to. If you mean disagreeing with your POV, then here I go again. Why on earth would you get banned? In 8 months of this Forum operating fully, only 1 member has been banned & one put on a no post status for a few days. Not exactly over moderated.

So, Ron, feel free to express your views but expect to be challenged if they are ill informed, incorrect or just plain different than another members. That is why we have over 10,000 posts. Because our members discuss what is on their mind, good or bad.

Glad I did not use LBFM out here literally in any post.  If anyone wants to know how I understand that acronym send me a PM.  Another old acronym from the army daze too.  And one I still hear today in various circles roll freely from those with any prior military service when you mention Philippines (PI) (RP).

R & R.  Is that a don’t ask don’t tell acronym too?   Some are old and gray  and Vietnam era like me and others young and dumb still but gulf war veterans too and they all seem to use PI still today.  And not in any nasty way either.  It is just a GP use term.  Who keeps teaching that to so many people if it so wrong in society today?

To call or refer to Saudi Arabia as just Saudi…….wrong too?  Now if it has sand or rag as part of it then I can see reasons to not use to describe a people or place.

Is GRO an in country term also or from external sources too?  And how can you get a fine in a bar?  Drink too slow?

Now to PM Graham for the real deal story on the PI acronym.  I gots to know…..

What started out as a little fun with my down south neighbor after his warm welcome to a new member seems to have put me in a bad light in some ways.   Maybe I will just lurk again and shut my keyboard down.  You all get to see the real deal and not some forum junkie when I tickle the keys.  I do not see nor did I deliver any disrespect in that acronym.  It is part of my learned (and maybe limited) vocabulary.  But it sure seems to wrinkle the panties of some out here.

I am and have been married to a island girl for some time now.  Several years over now if I really start to count.

We own property.  A nice big lot.  Ocean front and ocean back too.  It runs all the way from one side of the island to the other.  A big chuck of rock and coral full of trees and vegetation.  Maybe a home site one day for us (or just her after the fact).

We also have some house plans on the drawing board.  Just dreams at this point as a commitment is still in the making and decision process.  Hence why I come here for the real deal and straight talk on everything.  My half of the house has AC and hers is wide open PI style.  But come 4 years into the future and this old bird is going to retire and do something somewhere to enjoy the back side of life now.

I come here to get educated and to learn.  But also to share what I have learned too.  I don’t leap before I look usually so I like this place for showing both positive and negative to life on those rocks before I cross the pond with a one way attitude.  But the sugar bowl seems to be well used out here at times.  Straight talk in good taste is what I come to find.

But no one can say it better than my wife – sounds like pill-ah-pines in the voice of an angel.  I have yet to hear her once say RP or PI in any conversation.  I think we are the only ones hung up on that stuff.

I made some out of fun reference with Jack on his ‘Yo’ but he got rubbed wrong I think too.  Sorry Jack.  That term is also old with me.  It brings back memories of doing ground aerobics in the army.  We would all be lined up in a roll call formation and some guy with a smokey the bear hat would say – When I call your name answer ‘Here’.  And from the back half way through the call you hear one east coast boy yell out ‘Yo’ when his name was called.  Damn….50 push-ups courtesy of that guy from the DI.  Where is my bunk adapter………and sock and bar of soap!

Maybe I am out dated?  But not disrespectful in my eyes.  I guess I got to now know the dark side of the acronym PI.  I just don’t get it to be honest.  Someone PM me with the real deal story.

I must say – after my last 6 week vacation – That place was starting to get to me!  Hated to leave and so glad to board the plane at the same time.  Mixed emotions.  No electric.  No running water.  No food vendors on the streets.  Ripped off with over charges from wet market to little stores in town to even the trike drivers too..  And millions of smiles (with bad teeth).

Just peace and slow life way out on an island.  What is paradise?  A bolo and a young coconut with a kilo of fresh raw fish and rice and my wife?  As long as it has my wife it is paradise to me.

It is also still PI to me.
