WE\'RE MIGRATING BACK TO SMF!!
« on: October 29, 2012, 11:53:14 PM »
ALL MEMBERS AND GUESTS --   I have great news for all!  I\'ve received notification from Don Herrington that our forum will be migrated back to our old home with SMF!  I don\'t have an exact date or time yet, but I would say it could happen within the next few days.

For all of you who care about this forum, especially those who sent me private emails encouraging me, making suggestions, cursing me and kicking me in the can to get me moving, Thank You, one and all!    :)

I know we lost many good people and ask all of you who have email addresses for those we haven\'t seen for a while to let them know we\'re going to migrate back to SMF.  As I have more detailed info I\'ll pass it along.  But it looks like happy days will soon be here again!   :)   :)   :)

Great news. Once you get it back up and running then I also suggest a mass email to the members telling them the old forum is back since this new one seems to have frustrated a lot of people who may have left and will surely be happy again when the old format is back.

You are welcome for my size 11 shoe in your butt from time to time.    ;)

I find it hard to understand why there has been such a big problem, I can name another site that uses the same software and has never had a problem. It also looks very good, far better than the old LinP. Would it not be better to find someone that understands the new system than take a retrograde step and going back to the old software. Surely this is going to cause even more confusion and be the final straw for LinP. Just my honest opinion.

Colin I understand where you are coming from but the old saying if it ain\'t broke don\'t fix it seems to apply. The forum was working pretty good with the old software and has had many problems with the new software. Members tend to not be forgiving or have patience when they have problems accessing or using a forum and this one has given them plenty to complain about both on the forum and off.

Now with that said, I could live with the new software as a member here but I would prefer the old software and it seems some others might as well. I am not saying this to argue with you, just to point out my point of view as a member.

This software does not have pm abilities and that sort of defeats the purpose of a community. Then next it does not have preview post which makes it a pain to see if photos posted correctly without having to post them and then edit the post. The back key does not work well when posting and trying to fix a post and that is a real pain.

Next and probably pretty important to many, it seems lots of people knew how to work the old software but quite a few have been complaining about this software both on and off the forum and it is obvious to me that the forum has pretty much died not long after changing over. Where are all the old posters? Where are the ones who had been posting and stopped when the software stopped working. Some software is harder to work than others and I know that for a fact because I have played with SM, IPB and VBulletin and SM was the easiest to use, setup and work on.

Since Jack and others knew how to work on that one, then the question is why should they pull their hair out trying to learn a new software that obviously is hard to use and must have glitches in it.

I for one think a forum should be user friendly and most of us older guys seem to have problems wanting to learn new stuff, so many of us, myself included, were sad to see this new software in the first place but I still stuck around and tried to help the forum keep going by posting on it anyway but it seems a lot of others were discouraged and we can only pray they all come back and more to make the forum a success again. And lets all hope the re-install goes without glitches.

Lee, I agree with the saying if it aint broke dont fix it, the old forum was not broke but it was fixed. The problem seems to be that the main site software was changed to Joomla and Kunina ties in with it. Having spoken to someone that has successfully set up exactly the same system, I understand that the problem most likely lies with a lack of understanding in the way Joomla interfaces with Kunena and not Kunena itself. I am told that Kunena is simpler than SMS and therefore less prone to finger trouble.

I can understand members losing patience because this problem has been allowed to go on for so long. The problems should have been cleared in days but are continuing weeks later. The software does work; it is just that the administrators dont seem to understand it.

I agree that not having a PM is a negative aspect, but I believe it can be added. Kunena does have a preview button; maybe it just has not been implemented. There are only a few very minor differences between Kunena and SMS, I dont see that they should cause anyone any problems.

I regularly use this system on another forum and find it easy to use with no problems. I think that going back to the old system now is going to cause more problems than it solves, and I doubt if it will bring back the members that have left. Dons forum may have been the first, but there are now a number of alternatives to be found with a simple search, and the missing members may have found them.

The old forum was not compatible with Joomla, which is the software for the website.  Our purpose in changing to start with was because Don and I wanted to merge the website and forum under one url.  The only way to do it was to change the software for the forum to something compatible with Joomla.  Kunena was the software chosen for us.

As Lee pointed out, there are many things different in Kunena versus Simple Machines Forum (SMF) our old software.  Those differences, although seemingly small on the surface, have made a huge difference in how we operate.  Some changes were good, but the bad aspects far outwiegh the good.

The problem was \"allowed to go on for so long\" because no one gave the administrators proper instruction in it\'s use.  You can blame the admins all you want, but without proper training, no one can make the changes necessary to \"fix\" this system and force it to work.  The people who initially guided us through this have abandoned us, left us adrift to fend for ourselves.  That\'s simply not acceptable.  With only minimal choices left, we have chosen to return to SMF, software we\'d all gotten used to for several years.

I would hope that everyone bears with us and we regain what we once had.  There is a tremendous amount of competition in forums and the bad economy worldwide has caused many to rethink their priorities.  Hackers, scoundrels and pirates have skimmed off many of our members.  But I still think we can have a great forum and look forward to making that come true.  I also look to all our members to work with me and maintain a positive outlook.

Yes, a PM system can be added.  But does anyone know how to do it?  I don\'t.  I\'ve spent hours reading all the information I could on the different PM system software packages available that are compatible with Joomla, so did Gerlie, Don\'s assistant.  We couldn\'t figure it out and when we asked questions from Kunena and Joomla about how to do it correctly we were rudely told by their admins to go find out how on our own and stop asking stupid questions.  Not a nice way to deal with what I consider a customer service situation.

PM system aside, the problems we\'re having shouldn\'t be happening.  So, as soon as I can get it coordinated, we will return to SMF and our former reliable system.  I will then send out a mass mailing, somehow, to all our members inviting them \"back home\".

I just received email notification that a backup of all our database has been requested and we have an experienced tech who stands ready to migrate the forum back to SMF as soon as all our files are backed up.

This may take a few days however since it is All Saints Day and we\'re coming up on the weekend.  So, everyone be patient and we\'ll be back to full steam soon.

Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding!   :)   :)   :)

It will be great to be back on the old stomping grounds.

Now Jack; if you could just do something about the current exchange rate, like boost it to 50-1, we will be all set! B)

Take care,

Jason

I just did a 1 yr graph on XE and it made me sick. Steady fall almost non stop. Not quite free fall but maybe soon. At this time last year it was above 44 and now it\'s ready to hit the 40 mark. God help us all.
Thank you...God Bless...

Well, I wish I could Jason, but I have my hands full getting this crazy community back together.   ;D

I'm baaack!  So's the SMF Forum!  You'll all notice some differences in appearance and what have you.  Give me a little time to make some changes and tweak a few things.  I've only been here for 5 minutes.   ;)

I see no Admin tab for me to get into the settings, so I'll have to contact Cebu for further settings changes so I can do my thing.  Bear with me all.

It's good to be back home!   8)

Guess what.....we are here. I was just learning how to navigate through the old one. Wait....this IS the old one. OK, I was just learning how to navigate through the new one. Oh well, now I guess I'll learn the new/old one.
