I don't think they are aware of how you feel.  I don't think they intend to hide anything from you.  Communicate - you don't have to know the language to build rapport.  You wife should know that you want to know what's happening in your house.

I do think it is better to live away from the parents in law and the family. They can visit but being away gives the much needed space. Parents in law especially mom in laws sometimes like to give unsolicited opinion thinking that they are helping by sharing their knowledge or experience on it. But it sometimes can seem too nosy or too pushy.
As for wanting to know thinga that you think is important to know o. What is happening in your house, I think you can openly tell that to your other half so expectations can be managed :)
