INFLUENZA or flu (trangkaso) is a highly contagious viral disease. It spreads from person to person through spitting, sneezing, coughing, kissing or using articles freshly soiled with discharges from the nose and throat of an infected person.
SYMPTOMS
Cold sore throat
Fever/Headache
Hot eye sensation
Joint and muscle pains
Marked weakness
TREATMENT
Consult doctor immediately when fever, headache, running nose and pain in the joints develop
Observe proper personal hygience
Stay warm in bed and have plenty of rest
Drink plenty of liquids such as juices, milk, water and soup
Eat light meals
PREVENTION
Avoid crowds
Use your own toilet articles and handkerchief
Build up your resistance with nutritious food
Avoid exposure to rain and sudden changes in temperature
Observe strict personal hygiene
Gum Diseases
It is an infection which usually begin at the gums. At this stage it is called GINGIVITIS. If this is not treated, the infection will spread to the supporting tissue of the tooth and the condition is called PERIODONTITIS.
Causes of Disease:
Gum disease is caused by dental plaque which is a sticky, colorless, nearly transparent film which continuously forms- on the teeth when oral hygiene is neglected and, causes irritation to the gum which becomes inflamed.
There are certain factors that help increase dental plaque:
Dental Calculus - This gives the teeth a rough and uneven surface in which plaque can easily accumulate
Over-hanging dental restoration - This acts as area for plaque to accumulate
Crooked Teeth - This serve as area of accumulation of food particles
TREATMENT
The cause should be eliminated. To begin with, any plaque must be removed from all surfaces of the teeth and this must be maintained. In advance cases, dentist may have to resort to minor gum surgery.
PREVENTION
Regular check up by the dentist
General cleaning of the mouth by a dentist
Brushing of teeth after eating in the proper way

Typhoid Fever
TYPHOID FEVER is an infectious disease. It is caused by the typhoid bacilli which enter the body through contaminated food or water. Unclean hands and flies may carry the typhoid bacilli and contaminate food
SYMPTOMS
Headache
Continued fever for two weeks or more
Constipation or diarrhea with darkcolored stools
TREATMENT
Consult a doctor when. you have the above symptoms
PREVENTION
Keep patient from touching the food off others. Dispose of his leftovers.
Wash hands with soap-and water before eating and after using the toilet.
Dispose of feces and urine immediately in a sanitary, manner. Preferably, disinfect before disposal.
Do not let other members of the family use the patient's personal articles.
See to it that there are no flies in patient's room.
The community together with the health and allied workers should initiate and maintain activities for the prevention and control of typhoid fever such as:
Ensure that the community has safe water by teaching them to boil water coming from doubtful sources such as shallow wells and rivers if there is no chlorine available.
Eating establishments such as carinderias should conform to sanitary standards.
Always keep water containers clean and covered
Cook food properly. Vegetables and fruits eaten raw should be washed thoroughly before eating.
Clean yard to get rid of breeding places of flies.
