Cebu City
In the Island of Cebu, the world's business and leisure go hand in hand.
Called the "Queen City of the South," Cebu is the site of the new and
exciting business ventures between local and foreign capital. Amidst
such hectic commercial activity, Cebu's numerous beach resorts and
exhilarating historic city beckon tourists of all ages. The city also
has has numerous museums and churches. Cebu shopping offers a lot of
souvenir ideas from high quality fashion accessories, hand crafted
guitars, shell crafts to dried mango preserves, sugar coated biscuits
and peanut wafers.
The member makes a
excellent point. But personally, I have lived in Manila, and chosen to
live in Cebu,
the country’s second largest city. With a population of about 600,000,
it’s much smaller than Manila, but there is no shortage of culture,
education, dining and entertaining choices. We even have giant malls.

travels to the respective partners,
using low-cost public transportation ,
collecting film rolls and distributing

There are many other smaller cities where the cost of
living is even cheaper, such as Davao and
General Santos City on the island of Mindanao. This
area has a security problems now.
Davao
City
Best
known for its elegant orchids, exotic fruits and Muslim heritage. Davao
is a bustling city with cultural diversity. It is the industrial hub of
Mindanao with corporate centers, manufacturing sites, shopping centers,
hotels and casinos. Davao also features various points of interest for
the adventurous visitor. Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the country and
home to the Philippine Eagle is a close distance from Davao City.

Subic Bay
Located North of Manila in the island of Luzon, Subic Bay has become the
country's premier free port, boasting both natural wonders and the most
modern man-made infrastructures and facilities. Formerly known to be the
largest American naval base in Asia, this Special Economic Zone has been
transformed as a favorite destination of vacationing Manileños because
of its duty-free industrial and commercial establishments.

Samal, Mindanao
One of the Lists members, Tom Nowelsky, writes about
Siquijor:
Before too much time elapses, I want to report
on my recent visit to Davao and to the island of Samal. Samal is a small
island located near Davao in the Gulf of Davao. We flew on Air
Philippines from Cebu City to Davao.
The flight is only 40 minutes and our tickets were less than $60 USD
each round trip.
Davao is renowned for many types of fruit, including the dreaded durian.
Durian is really quite delicious, although few learn this because of
being unable to get past the smell, which has been likened to decaying
flesh. In any event, across from the airport is a public market where
many different fruits are sold. Many travelers leaving Davao airport buy
large quantities of fruit (especially pomelos) which are crated and
delivered to your departure area, for checking onto your flight.
During this trip, we stayed with friends at a development called
Woodridge, a beautiful secure compound which boasts a clubhouse, nice
swimming pool, restaurant, and tennis courts.
Our friends have a very nice (although small) home in this complex and
the cost was less than $60,000 USD, and included a late-model SUV.
We enjoyed the food at the restaurant, which is operated by a Spaniard
Expat and his Filipina wife. They made real Paella, a Spanish dish with
rice and seafood that was excellent.
During our visit, we stayed at a resort on the island of Samal. Samal
island has several resorts, including "Paradise Island." This is
primarily a day-use beach and recreation area, which can be reached from
Davao by taking a 15 minute public Banca. When last we visited Paradise
Island, the Banca was 10 Peso per person. At this resort, there may be
some overnight accommodations, but it is primarily day use, with lunch
and snacks available right on the beach.
During this trip, we opted for a more plush resort: Pearl Farm Resort.
Our Pump Boat ride to Pearl Farm was about 45 minutes in length, and the
cost was included in our room rate. Pearl Farm features two very nice
swimming pools, a complete water-toys rental booth, an excellent
restaurant, and a very nice sandy beach. I also found some really
excellent snorkeling reefs around the area.
Our room rate of about $55.00 per night included a great breakfast, and
a large buffet lunch for two people.
Although there is no nightlife to speak of, we were very satisfied with
our stay.
I guess that no report on Davao would be complete without some mention
of the "safety" of the area. While there, my friend and I managed to
take in some of the nightlife of Davao, and I felt completely safe
walking around various areas after dark. Many people believe that the
city is one of the safest in the world, because of a Mayor who runs the
place like a tyrant. Rumor has it that he actually employs a death squad
to kill off local criminals, and the word has gotten around. So, there
appears to be almost no crime in existence here.
For those of you who spend your time in Angeles or Manila, or even in
Cebu, you may find Davao to be a bit provincial, although it is much
larger and more cosmopolitan than cities such as Tagbilaran or Dumaguete.
It boasts at least two large malls. I would recommend Davao as a place
to visit, or even to live, for those who find the larger cities to have
too much pollution and traffic.

Tom Nowelsky

My nephew in Davao City always speaks highly of the
safety and calm of Davao City. He claims that the
strategies of Mayor RD over the years makes for a very
safe city. Any thoughts? What about neighboring cities
such as Panabo?
Claire Louise Sienes wrote:
I don't want to sound biased simply because I've lived
here in Davao City all my life but, I would be lying if
I didn't agree with your nephew. Davao City has
consistently made it to the Top 20 most liveable cities
in Asia; The Police Department has been consistently
named as the Best Police precint in RP for years in a
row. The Mayor here is strict and enforces discipline
but his strategy makes for a very safe city, indeed.
I've travelled to other cities/places in the Philippines
and so, I've noticed differences in places, even in
water supply or the taste of water. I have been to
Panabo several times and Tagum City since I often had to
have duties in provincial hospitals as part of my
internship years ago and I can say that Panabo is okay
and so is Tagum City. It's just that a lot of students
from far-away provinces and neighboring cities still
choose to go to College in Davao City and often,
difficult medical cases are transferred to hospitals
here in Davao City. All in all, regardless of how
newspapers often paint a scary picture of Davao City,
it's simply sensationalism. Fact: Davao has the Most
Outstanding Water Utility in Asia; Drinking water here
has the best taste:) For more facts, you may click this
