The Gardening Thread
HappyBee:
There are a few old threads on this topic but thought I'd start a new one.
For those of us who like gardening, how about sharing what you love to plant and any tips you have on how to plant them (from seeds or a cutting), and how you keep your plants healthy. To make it easier for those who are looking for a particular plant, how about keeping each post focused on one type of plant and putting a title at the top... a little like this:
JACKFRUIT
I love planting jackfruit (langka or nangka) because it is really easy to grow. All you do is buy some ripe jackfruit (uncooked obviously!) and take out the seeds. Plant them shallow in some loose dirt or wood shavings, and in a few days they will sprout. No need to dry the seeds before planting.
When they are strong enough you can plant them in your desired location. The main danger to the seedlings that I have found is our chickens, so I plant them first in plastic pig food packets or gallons, and I make sure the seedlings are strong before I transfer them to their final destination.
The tree is beautiful to look at, and our first one that we planted three years ago is about 10-12 feet high now. It hasn't borne fruit yet, but my husband says it will around the five year mark.
Jackfruit can be eaten raw when it is ripe, or the unripe fruit can be cooked in coconut milk for a lovely ulam / sudan.

Yes... good idea for a thread.
Our 'garden' (half-hectare) is a bit of a construction site at the moment, but my wife has already planted some stuff around the perimeter. (Ampalaya, runner beans, Papaya, etc).
I will report back !

You have a garden of 5,000 sqm? Wish you well with that, my back shudders at the thought.

Coconuts :)
Usually they can plant themselves. But if you want then in a certain location, just take the small one that started from a fallen coconut and move it. Can help it along by drying some of the solid waste from the pig(s) and place around it. Cut the unwanted plants from around it for several years so it can get and stay in the sun, as it won't grow if covered over with other competing plants. Also keep any animals away from it while small.
When they get big, you get coconuts or coconut wine (but not both). Not much maintenance after they get big, except to keep away from typhoons. Often the adult trees don't agree well with the storms, but in that case you get lumber.
The big leaves make nice sun shelter. But not as good of shelter as Bananas, as the Coconut gets much taller and the leave are only at the top.

We also have Pineapples.... and Bananas. :)
I will also be planting tomatoes, once I've worked out where the Chickens and Ducks will be going.
