To help or steal.

How is the experience with global service clubs in the Philippines ?

A couple that come to mind are,  Lions and Rotary.  There are many others,  some from religious groups and others not.

I believe there are some ppl in these groups that enjoy to help others.  I also believe there are some abuses of situation that can occur,  especially in lower income areas.

Hey FastWalk,

Yes you are correct, some are genuine in helping, but alas some just want to take/steal/mislead/misinform, for their own benefit. Where I am, there are many groups helping the local communities, as in orphanages, an elderly ladies home, a non profit burns unit, schools. The groups doing the help, whether it is financial or physical, are VFW (vets of foreign wars), RSL (Returned Service League), golf club, Monday club, Hash House Harriers. And there are others I can't remember the group names. For the 5 yrs I have lived here, only "once" had I heard of anyone being in the bad part of help.

Eg of help given are:

Monthly rice supply to orphanage & elderly ladies home
Refurb of orphanage, including elec, plumbing, painting, fix roofs, replace stairs, CR complete fix, washing machines, music equip, bedding, benches & tables and many other bits to make the orphans lives a lot better. (note the orphans are all disabled in some way or other)
Outside of our area, as the kids at the orphanage have their hearing aids done, there are even kids travelling from Leyte, to Zambales, just to be apart of the hearing aid (all free except one way transport)
Non profit burns unit, has been given regular financial help, many & much needed burns suits, bandages, creams etc, all free from good hospitals in Aus
Taking kids & elderly ladies on outings, with the foreign men, ensuring their female partners join them, to help with the language barriers
Adding aircon's or fans in smaller schools, or refurb some class rooms with both air & natural light etc

There are many other things/projects that have been given (freely) by the above named groups and others. As foreigners, we have some more money and time on our hands, so with all the regular get-togethers, projects appear & then the groups just decide which things will be given help or not.

Of course there are some folks just wanting to take advantage of the good nature of the "rich foreigners", but over the years here, mostly it is easy to see the real for the takers. As we have a transient foreign population, help is there, when it is MOST needed and at times, when the locals least expect it.

Makes you feel good, at the end of the day.

Thanks for the info.

I sort of expect to see some poor locals or even not so poor looking to take advantage as it is sort of the way of things and doesn't bother me.  Not so understanding if finding out that it is a rich foreigner that is doing the taking.  Is the later a common thing to occur ?  I guess common sense would tell me yes...

Taking advantage of rich foreigners is something that seems embedded in any 3rd world country.

If you don't mind me asking, how many 3rd world countries did you use in your sample?
