FISHING

Does anybody know where one could go fishing?  I am sure fresh water fishing is out of the question (or is it?).
One of the things I really miss and it seems it should be very possible here

I fish here all the time, have boat, and taught my brother in law how to fish with hand line and make lures out of stainless

There are several freshwater lakes and streams in the Philippines where you can fish.  Some I don't recommend due to run off from the farms, but others are just fine.  Our family has a farm in northern Luzon near Buguey, Cagayan and the fishing there is great!  Attached are some pics of my nephew with some of the fish he caught in the river behind our farm.

The local names for fish probably don't make sense to most of us.  Here's a link to a fish search database that allows you to insert the local name of a fish species and see the common name as well as the scientific name.

http://www.fishbase.org/search.php

Insert the name, such as Lapu Lapu, in the common name box then click search.  It shows the various species types associated with that common name.  If you then click on the scientific name it shows a photo of the fish as well as a map showing their typical range.  By the way, Lapu Lapu is known as a Grouper by everyone else.   Delicious fish on the grill!  ;)

Jack, I love the red fish you get here, In the states we call them snapper, cant remember the name here...but they are very common.  Maline still loves milk fish and so do the kids, but I really dont care for them much,  fishing here can be great, but you have to try different methods.  Mostly here in Tacloban the locals just use nets, Ive seen fishing rods but its rare.  I just use hand lines and troll out the back of the boat..

It's very common to use a cast net, known in our family as a Tabukol.  Fishing from the bangka in the river is usually done with a Tabukol.  But when they go out to sea they use a hand line, rolling the extra line on a wooden hand reel like the one attached below.  Fishing from the river shore I've seen many people using bamboo poles like you and I used as kids, but I've seen a few spinning reels being used from the pier and jetty in Aparri as well.  My nephew Walter uses all of the above, although he needs a new reel.  My next trip to the farm I'll take him a new pole and spinning reel and hope I get to go fishing with him!   :)
