Labor Day Demostrations

<     Labor Day protests are scheduled to take place in several provinces and cities on Tuesday 1 May. A large scale protest is planned for the Mendiola area of Metro Manila, with smaller protests planned in several other sites across the National Capital Region and in other cities, including Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, Bacolod City and General Santos City.

Barangay elections are due to take place across the Philippines on Monday 14 May. Checkpoints and other security measures may be in place at election hotspots around the country.  >

I usually find it better to make protest and election days, days of rest for me, I have to stay home and rest some days anyway due to health issues, so I just add those into my rest days in order to avoid running into any possible problems, so what do you all do or plan to do during those types of days?

Just daily routine.  I don't go near any of those areas as it is under normal circumstances.  I don't have to go far to get to anything and everything I need or want to do and if it is farther than walking, I usually go the back roads to or for it.

Living in the "sticks", one day is much like any other. Normally we go into the town (about 8 kms away)  on Tuesdays, as it is the day the farmers and traders set up a market behind the jeepney terminal. Great place to get that essential, must-have tool I can't live without 

Then it's on to the local coffee shop for coffee and a fresh baked sticky bun. So we'll just give it a miss and have coffee on Wednesday instead.   

Last Labor and election days, nothing untoward was reported here-abouts, as most folks are just trying to earn a crust and can't afford to take a day of from work. Politics are quote "Something they do in Manila and it doesn't feed my family", unquote, according to my rice farming neighbours. LOL!

So me, as an Alien, will just potter around our place tomorrow, keeping a low profile as normal.

We should be fine, taking the wife today to Crosswinds Resort, Tagaytay, for 3 day/2 nights for her birthday.  Got a 1 bedroom suite for 58% on Agoda.

How about mine?  I am going to several places to find me another big metal rack, that does not cost too much, for my storage closet.

The wife called me this morning from down town. new glasses ready for collection.

Took a trip down and everything is open, normal Tuesday, total traffic chaos, around the farmers' market. Only thing to say it's a holiday is the banks and Municipality offices are closed.

Long lines at the ATMs and in the supermarkets, 'cos it's the first of the month, but everyone is too busy making money to worry about politics, the wife says.

Thank goodness for sane people, in a sane provincial town.

Most Filipinos celebrate labor day by protesting,  typically to bring attention to the existing or current issues that affect the workers. If you got no work during this day, you could try going outside of the city and visit provinces or islands. It could be a great opportunity to travel and go away from the hustle and bustle of city life. One of the places I'd recommend is Bicol. They have such awesome people and a majestic Mayon volcano.

I must disagree with you there. In nearly all the provinces I've been to or have knowledge of, most Filipinos do not go protesting. They treat holidays as days of rest/family time. That is if they aren't working, which most daily wage earners will try to do.

Maybe those in the larger cities feel the urge to go and protest, but I posit that most Filipinos are actually residing outside of urban areas.

100 million plus of population. So most would equal more than 50 million? Even large scale protests in Manila don't number more that a few thousand, maybe 10 if they're lucky, as has been reported on the TV News in the past.

My thoughts only of course.

You are actually right. I should not have used the word most because the number of Filipinos who chooses to spend the holiday with their family really outnumber those who join protests. But during labor day, expect to see rally not only in the big cities but even in provinces.
