Sorta surprised it's still around. Or than any messenger system that is not attached to a mass media setup(fb) is still up. Between skype and facetime for the microsoft/apple crowds, most messenger setups would seem to go extinct.
Yeah, because of smartphones things like WhatsApp, WeChat, Line, FB Messenger, iMessage, Viber and so on are much more popular these days.
I still have a soft spot for the old messenger apps circa 2003: ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN Messenger. Those were the precambrian days of messenger tools. Then the iPhone got released in 2007 and that was a game changer. The shift to smartphones started, and the effect were very pronounced in places like Thailand and Philippines, as now you could carry the internet in your pocket, rather than having to make a trip to the internet cafe!
Still have a soft spot for ICQ. I joined up in the late nineties, but was very active on there from about 2000 until about 2004.
These days I tend to use Viber and iMessage. Line was very popular in Thailand in 2016. Seemed to be used quite a bit when I went to Phils earlier this year too.
I was an active user of Yahoo Messenger too during 2003, 2004, but kept reverting back to the old stalwart of ICQ.
Goodbye Yahoo Messenger! RIP!
