Smart or Globe

Palawan Aussie:
Seems there is a considerable difference in opinion as to which is best, Smart or Globe.

For example, today the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper reports that ..

"MANILA, Philippines — Globe Telecom continues to be seen by the public as the “better” network in delivering high-speed wireless broadband services, according to a recent Nielsen survey. Results of a recent brand health study survey by Nielsen showed that most people considered Globe as the brand that is a leader in 4G—“the brand that has the biggest 4G network,” “the brand that was first to offer 4G,” “fast Internet downloading using my cellphone,” and “fast Internet uploading using my cellphone.” Results showed that Globe “had a clear and significant edge over its rival on the abovementioned qualities,” Globe said in a statement over the weekend. "

However, two government reports from last year place Smart well ahead ..

"Tests by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) show Smart to be ahead of Globe in five different parameters testing basic voice services for the last two quarters of 2012.

The purpose of the tests is to measure their network performance and compare the results to the existing NTC prescribed minimum service performance standards.

The tests were conducted using post-paid Globe and Smart’s Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards subscribing to regular services and not unlimited services. Sun SIMs, Talk and Text SIMs, Red Mobile SIMs and Touch Mobile SIMs were not used because these SIMs are sharing the networks of either Globe or Smart. The results of the tests in detail on the following parameters are as follows ... And as of April last year, Smart’s LTE network covered 46 cities and 69 municipalities .. much larger than the competition." etc

We find that it depends on where you are in the Phils. However, whichever company, I do think that basing data (internet) charges on time online seems a silly idea to me. In Australia, one is sold a Gb load, rather than an online time. Selling by time online simply encourages the service to be oversold, and is quite unfair if the service is very slow. Seems to me, charging by the actual amount of bytes downloaded is fairer.

Anyway, what do people think regards Smart or Globe or phones etc (eg, PLDT) in general?

Cheers,
Stephen

Big Jim:
I have been happily using Globe since 2003 while listening to endless complaints by Smart users.

It is not the best deal you can get but it doesn't matter how good the deal is if you can't use it. Globe has coverage every where I need it. And despite the fact that Smart claims it covers 100% of the Philippines. It doesn't.

I use a Globe dongle on Leyte for internet after previously having a Globe landline with internet. The Globe dongle is much faster. The average line speed for the dongle is about 1400kbps and download speed averages about 140kbps.

We have both and there does not seem to be much difference between them. I took up Smart so that I could get free calls to complain about their internet :) Bing originally had Globe to get the UNLI to talk to some relatives she then had to borrow mine to get cheaper calls to the others. She has now bought a new dual sim phone with one of each.

You can now buy a cell with both Smart and Globe sim cards?  Wow!  Talaga?

fred:
You can buy dual sim card phones here no problem.. Best to ask the locals which sim card has the best signal in the area..
What works in your area is not necessarily the best 4 miles down the road..
Sim cards average about 50  Pesos each.
