Abbreviations, Acronyms, Shortcuts and other stuff to know.

From time to time posters on the Yahoo grupo, and probably here in the forum as well, will ask what does such and such abbreviation mean?  Well, hopefully this thread can alleviate part of the problem.  After all, Pinoys love abbreviations, acronyms and shortcuts.  I envision this as a place where we can all contribute to our knowledge base of what exactly does CDO stand for?  And others.

RP=Republika ng Pilipinas, the official name of the country and the one that is preferred by polite company.

PI=Philippine Islands, the name of the country while under the American occupation.  Many Pinoy take offense at this term as after all they do have a new name that they have given to their country.

CDO=Cagayan de Oro, a city in Northern Mindanao

CENOMAR=Certificate of No Marriage

CR=Comfort Room, bathroom to Kanos, WC to UK citizens.   ;)

EDSA=Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, a major road in Metro Manila and a major historical place that played part in the Coup against former President Ferdinand Marcos.

GenSan=General Santos City, a city in southern Mindanao

LuzVaMinda=shortcut for Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, or the three major regions of the RP.  Also used as a female name.

MM=Metro Manila

NCR=National Capital Region, in Metro Manila

NegOr=Negros Oriental

OFW=Overseas Filipino Worker

BDO=Banco de Oro

BPI=Bank of the Philippine Islands

EPCI=Equitable PCI Bank, after Equitable Bank merged with Philippine Commercial International Bank

PNB=Philippine National Bank, also has a branch for shipping balikbayan boxes (PNB-Cargo)

ABS-CBN or GMA7, two television networks

LBC=Luzon Brokerage Company, a major shipper of balikbayan boxes

NLEX=North Luzon Expressway

PAL=Plane Always Late  :D  Just joking to see if you\'re awake.  PAL is Philippine Air Lines

PBA=Philippine Basketball Association

SCTEX=Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway

SMB=San Miguel Beer

AFP=Armed Forces of the Philippines

PNP=Philippine National Police

NPA=New People\'s Army, rebels, like to call themselves Communists

Moro=Muslim

MILF=Moro Islamic Liberation Front, rebels, mostly in Mindanao

ARMM=Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao

GMA=Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the President

PGMA=President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

FVR=Fidel V. Ramos, a former president

BI (or BOI)=Bureau of Immigration

BIR=Bureau of Internal Revenue, the tax guys

COMELEC=Commission on Elections

DA=Department of Agriculture

DENR=Department of Environment and Natural Resources

DepED=Department of Education

DOH=Department of Health

DOLE=Department of Labor and Employment

DOST-Department of Science and Technology

DPWH=Department of Public Works and Highways

DTI=Department of Trade and Industry

LTO=Land Transportaion Office, where you go to get an RP driving license.

MERALCO=Manila Electric Company

NAPOCOR=National Power Corporation

NBI=National Bureau of Investigation

NSO=National Statistics Office, birth and death certificates, marriages, annulments,

PAGASA=Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration

VECO=Visayan Electric Company




That\'s all for now folks.  I hope this helps out some of the newbies in finding the info they want and need.  Hopefully others can add what I\'ve missed or forgotten.

Oh yeah, almost forgot the most import acronym that we all most definitely need to know.

SLEX: Same as NLEX only South
