Which states have no personal income tax?

Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income. To see how other states compare, check out the Federation of Tax Administrators\' listing of individual income tax rates for 2006.

I know that if you live in a state that charges personal income tax, they will try to tax you while you live in the RP.  But what about someone who has a 13a or ACR?  Since you would be an actual resident of the RP, would they still try to tax you for state income taxes?

Graywolf,

If one\'s former state of residence, before the move to the Philippines, has a State income tax, and if one\'s income comes from that state, there still exists a filing requirement to that state.   If the income is Social Security alone, there probably is no filing requirement (State or Federal) at all.  California does not tax Social Security.

Thank you, Ray!  I had heard something similar to that before and just wanted to get it on record here in the new Forum for others to read and discuss.  I will, however, continue to monitor the IRS and see what they have to say, when the time comes.  We have about 4 years left here before we make the final move to the RP.

Thanks again!

Looks like it maybe wise to set up residence in a non-taxing state before leaving!!!

Yes, and being so close to Florida, that would be a natural choice for both of us, Kurt and one I\'m seriously considering since Gloria can continue to work for Walgreens in Florida and further build her nest egg through her profit sharing plan.

I know this is a dated thread, but still thought I would share my experiences.

I come from a state that has State taxes in income and dividends and all the above.

When I first moved overseas, still working for a US company, I initiated the company to discontinue the removal of my state income taxes.  Since then, I have not paid income taxes to the state, including what little dividends I get on my savings account, that is still based in my home state.  I still have an address in the state, my brother\'s, and still carry that state\'s driver\'s license.

I think, if you don\'t live there, no need to pay tax....unless maybe if you keep a house back there and have rental income or something like that.

California is our resident home State, but since we haven't lived there the entire year we are exempt from paying California State Tax!

Only 7 States have no State Income Tax all together (I believe the OP had this same info)

http://taxes.about.com/od/statetaxes/a/tax-free-states.htm

Alaska
Florida
Nevada
South Dakota
Texas
Washington
Wyoming
Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income.

Some non-residents of California still have to pay California income taxes.  Non-residents of California who receive income from California sources still have to pay California income taxes.  For example, if you have rental property in California you have to pay California income taxes on the rental income even if you don't live in California.

A lot of countries have mutual double tax agreements where you can chose to pay tax to either one whichever is to your advantage. The Philippines has agreements with 37 different countries. Each agreement is different so need to be checked carefully.

It was understood no income of any kind was earned in the State and that includes no rental property and or small business! Therefore I repeat, no one has to pay State Tax if one is out of the country!
We've already done our joint ITR, we don't have to pay the State of California anything since we have been living overseas the entire year of 2012 and don't have any deductions or claims of any kind.
So, if any of you are in the same situation, you owe nothing to State, but you may owe State taxes only the number of days you were in the state physically that has state income tax in 2012! Now Federal tax is another matter, too complicated to get into! Each to their own on that one! Anyway, let's stay on the subject about the Philippines! ??? :o :-[

California does not tax the retirement income of nonresidents.  (Federal law provisions prohibit states from taxing the retirement income of nonresidents.)

You probably don't have to pay, but it would be a good idea to check with your state tax laws just for peace of mind.  Where did you live in the US?
