2017/2018 Further Education Costs in Baguio

Our daughter is a 3rd year MedTech undergrad at the Saint Louis Uiniversity (SLU) Baguio, which is a private, Dep-Ed accredited university.

(All following figures are in Philippines’ Peso.)

The fees are quite reasonable, about 25,000 per term/semester (3 a year) plus around 10,000 for special projects/personal safety equipment/tools etc. etc. per year.

The 3 terms are; August to December, January to Easter, and Easter to June.

An optional 8 week summer (June/July) school is 12,000.
She chose to do that, so most of her 5 year classroom lectures and academics (a unit credit system is followed) can be completed in 4 years, with the 5th year almost totally devoted to practical OJT in outside labs and hospitals, before final graduation refresher studies.

Her single occupancy accommodation (split level 2 rooms with small kitchen area, toilet and hot water shower) with free water, is PhP 6,500 per month.

Room electric is a fixed charge of 700 pm.

Internet - Smart Pocket WiFi internet, 10Gb package, is 799 pm.

Plus 5,000 for her monthly food and necessities allowance.

So around 250,000 +/- a year

On the plus side, both our local Municipality and the Bataan Provincial Government, have awarded her yearly (but paid in 2 tranches) bursaries of up to 4,000 from local and 8,000 from Bataan. Both these allowances are based on her achieving, in all her grades, 90% or better in the preceding academic year.

Hello Peter, this is very helpful for my long term plans. Gives me a good idea about education costs. My concern is what about the Job finding help? I see they have OJT and this would be how a person would prove themselves, but what is the placement percentage? Is this college one of the best for getting a job? Also I see you must live in Baguio and I was wondering if you have any advice for Hotels. I have never been there, but I have plans of wanting to live there in the future. Thank you.

Sorry for the delay, we've had our (#1) daughter and hubby visiting us from the UK.

We live in the Bataan, not Baguio, so anything I may say about Baguio is from an "outside looking in" perspective.
We picked SLU in Baguio for a number of reasons. Primarily as there is not a uni offering a Medtech degree course locally.

There is uni in Angeles, 30 miles away, and quite a few in Manila 70 miles away, but my wife was hesitant to let her go to any of these. Security of a 17 year old (at the time) on her own was our main concern.

The high school my daughter was attending has links to SLU and was able to give some excellent advice on what SLU had to offer. Of course we also did some indepndant research as well.
One of my wife's cousins and his wife have retired from working in Europe and are living in Baguio, so having relatives close in case of emergencies was an advantage.

4 of her high school classmates also went to SLU, but in different subjects, so she has peer support if she needs it.

The final decision we left to her and she chose SLU Baguio, based on what she already researched and thought was in her best long term interests. (Sighs of relief from us I may add!)

SLU does have, I've been assured, a post graduate placement scheme, both for those who have graduated and those who have passed their professional Board license exams.

My daughter has expressed a desire to join the Philippines' Navy or Coastguard, which we are supportive of. (And quite proud of her decision.)

Regarding hotels, I don't have any up to date, personal, experience with them, as we always bunk down in our daughter's rooms (one advantage of her not being in sharing accommodation) or we stay at her cousin's place, which is a bit out of the town proper.
Our daughter and her hubby from the UK stayed 4 nights in the City Lights Hotel and were quite impressed with it. The hotel has an online website which actually shows the hotel as it really is - LOL!  It has clean airy bedrooms, with complementary buffet breakfasts.
David our son-in-law, has to watch what he eats, but there was plenty on the buffet that he could eat. A nice coffee shop on the ground floor, with covered, secured, car- parking underneath. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from Session Road and 10 minutes from the SM Mall. So this one is recommended.
