Vale, Baroness Margaret Thatcher
« on: April 08, 2013, 09:50:44 PM »
Sincere condolences to our respected British contingent on the death of Baroness Margaret Thatcher.

To be elected Prime Minister of England is indeed an honorable achievement. To be elected to the position of Prime Minister three times, for twelve consecutive years, is most certainly a remarkable achievement.

One might not have agreed with all of her political policies and achievements, though President Ronald Reagan apparently had many ideas in common and was certainly inspired by a number of Lady Thatcher's initiatives, one must indeed respect her considerable contribution to Britain and indeed to the world at large. A stateswoman of remarkable character and achievement.

With respect ..

Stephen & Mary

I think she was a divisive figure for many and like Marmite, you either love her or hate her, and there is seldom anything in between.

In my purely personal view and from my personal history, I remember the 3 days weeks, the rubbish piling up on the streets, the bodies not being buried all because of strikes and working as I did at Heathrow, the appalling over-staffing and union rules which drove the entire airport into the ground.

Personally I am grateful to her for controlling the unions, allowing me to buy my first house, encouraging me to start my own business, and teaching me that hard work does bring results but that you have to take risks to get there, and that I am solely responsible for my own future, not anyone else and certainly not any government.

So for me, I mourn her loss

I recognise and appreciate, that for others, particulalry those caught up in the truly horrific challenges around the miners dispute, and the devastation wrecked particularly in the North of England to whole communities, they will never forgive.

So thanks Palawan for your comments, and for anyone who feels the opposite to me, I respect your viewpoint too, I can't say I fully understand it, but I do respect it.

Ian

I am one of those that had a strong dislike for her and wonder how she ever became prime minister,  even her very upper class voice I found irritating. I really felt unhappy that she was considered a symbol of the UK. It is sad when anyone passes on, but I reserve my sympathy for people I respect.

Aren't we now drifting well off the 'Living in the Philippines' theme?

Not as far as Im concerned.. If it wasn't for ole Maggie I doubt very much that I would be able to retire here this early.. When she gave me the right to buy my Council home it pushed my plans forward 15 years at least.
RIP Maggy Thatcher.

Let me add my condolences to our British members.  Wish the U.S. had a reincarnation of Thatcher or Reagan as our President.

I had to look up the meaning of Vale in the context that you used it.

Now that I know it, I wish that read headed thing born in Wales, who thinks she is an Aussie, would vale herself and soon.

As for the Iron lady. She was a woman I had a lot of respect for and I remember feeling incensed when John Major took her place.

I understand her favourite TV show while she was in office was Yes Minister, later Yes Prime Minister. That is one of my favourite all time TV shows.
I used to wonder what it would be like to read other people's minds.

Then I got a facebook account and now I am over it.
