US 2017 Tax E-File

Tried earlier this week to file with Turbo Tax for free, it was a no go, kept upgrading me to Deluxe vice Freedom.  Had done it last year in Feb with no problem.  Tried again today using the IRS site(as I did earlier in the week) and it was processed for free without upgrading me to Deluxe(fee charge).   If AGI is less $33K you can use regardless of age or where you live.  AGI for myself and maybe others does not count SS in the total amount.

Haven't tried the free Turbo Tax for 2017, but did last year even with an AGI over $33k.
I started late getting copies of all of my Form 1099s. Just changing all of my government website's passwords every 90 to 150 days is always a pain in the arse.

What do mean by using the IRS website to use Turbo Tax for free?
From what is stated below - Active Duty Military with a W2. No mention of 1099Rs for retirees from the military.

Through Intuit and the Intuit Tax Freedom Project, taxpayers can qualify to use TurboTax® Freedom Edition if they meet the qualification requirements.

If you qualify for a free federal income tax return this year, you can file both your federal and state tax return for free.

To qualify, you must have met one of the following requirements:

Qualify for the Earned Income Credit (EIC). What is this?
Served as Active Duty Military. You must have a 2017 W-2 form from the military and earned an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $66,000 or less. Active Duty Military includes Reservists and National Guard.
You must have earned $33,000 or less Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

Well I guess you are really a rich foreigner if your AGI was more than $33K.   Mine is less than that since SS does not count toward the AGI.  I could have gone directly to Turbo Tax which I actually did but it kept bumping me to Deluxe. Today I just went to the IRS free file page that had also tried earlier but bumped me to Deluxe also.

I just did a test run with Turbo Tax and it's no longer free for me since my AGI is well over $33k.
Fortunately what we owe to our Federal tax owed is $485 less than last year. So Turbo Tax's fees of $78.00 for both Federal and State won't hurt our piggy bank. I'll just pay it and not mess around looking for other options to do it for free. Anyway it's all done and ready to e-file before the deadline..
Also they only now accept U.S. credit card payments for their services. Last year they just debited my U.S. BofA checking account.

The deadline for us living overseas is 15 Jun not 17 Apr.

Yes they do now.

Yes they do, but they asked for a US address, ph #, and ID while I was finalizing the e-file.

Turbo Tax screwed up their payment option, where direct debit from my U.S. BofA account is no longer an option and they now charge $39.99 for each filing when not qualified for their free filing.
I found that Tax Slayer provided the direct debit from our U.S. bank account and or credit card payments and they charge lower fees for their filing of our Federal and State if not qualified for the free e-filing for Federal and State depending on one's adjusted gross income.

Just an update to using Tax Slayer, they do provide direct debit to pay taxes owed from one's U.S. bank account, but the fees for preparing my Federal and State forms has to be paid using a credit card with a U.S. billing address associated with my credit card.
I just called my BofA bank in Calif to change my billing address to show a U.S. billing address, because Tax Slayer would not accept a foreign address associated with my credit card. After payment goes through, I  can change my address back to my Philippine address. BofA's on-line profile contact info only accepts one address where as my other credit cards have provision to accept U.S. and foreign addresses like my USAA credit union account.
