Title: Forum meet up
Post by: coleman2347 on August 30, 2014, 05:13:58 PM
Maline just read all of this and she said dont they know its the Filipino way we dont have problems with that...she was kidding...then she said why dont all you and all your friends on this forum have a reunion, all you should meet, which is not a bad idea

Oh boy,

These Filipina's know how to start a discussion!!! OK, I'm
being a bit pedantic but, it can't be a reunion as most of us
have never met. Nevertheless, if members are interested, the
next thing I predict is, where the heck are we gong to meet?
Your place, my place, his place her place????? Does Maline
really know what she is starting??  ???  :o

A veritable confusion of posts! But .... I like the idea. The logistics
would be huge, but not insurmountable. Maybe we could have a
seperate section for the people who would like to attend and put
their name down. Then would come the discussion of "where" that
would be the most interesting bit I would imagine. Maybe other
members will throw out their ideas? Not to forget "when"!!!

ok, from what I know, and think, Cebu would be the center of the logistics, which is good as they have flights from everywhere there. as to when it would be hard but i think doable....lets start a topic, i dont know where, so we can get together, have to make allowances for those that dont live here full time....as it still cost mucho to fly here...for the members here it would be fairly easy but for me I would like to meet such notables as Jack etc.  what do you think

Cebu meetup would be great for us. :) We are in Cebu from early to mid Feb the latest, depending on flights availability and prices, and we stay until sometime in May, so an end of Feb, anytime in March or April meetup would be great with us, should that work for others, and if you can wait that long, and of course if you guys even want to meet up with this pain in the arse, :P then we would just need some advance notice as next year we will also be spending some time in Mindanao visiting some of Nila's family. It would be great for us to meet you all!

Kinda hard for Jack to do the meet up he is still on the opposite side of the pond.

The meet up is a great thing. One of the other groups I'm in has already done it once and has another scheduled for this coming 20-21 Sept. at 100 Islands. First one drew about 15 people from all over Luzon and the second is looking to have up to 50 attendees.

For some money is an issue and some of us have spouses that work full time so logistics of everyone getting the same dates off is almost a nightmare.

Im game, what do the folks here think about Cebu...lodging, cool places and central for most of us...as for the date, unless there is a emergency, we are good for anytime..Im retired and Maline can get away...I usually fly from Cebu anyway as Tacloban is a 30 min flight from here.  As far as I know from Tacloban, only Manila and Cebu are options...for flying.  Personally i think its a great idea, does anybody know when Jack is availible, haha Im sure he will read this so he can answer ....Diba your invited also, even if your a boot hehe...its up to us

As long as we keep it an open-ended gathering, I'm game.  My largest problem is I don't know when my next visit will be.

I agree with Cebu as it's centrally located.  I'd also suggest that we agree to have more than one.  That way if some can't make the first, then they can attend the second and so on.  Sort of a semi-regular meeting of the minds.  As for places to stay, I see no reason for us to all stay in one place as some have condos while others will be coming from out of town.  But setting up a good gathering place is always a good idea.  I like the idea of meeting up at one of the local malls and going form there to the resto of choice for the day/evening.

We'll keep this thread open so that whenever a group of any size decides it's time, they can post it here and others who are available can jump in.

One request I will make is that any time a group gathers, take a photo or two and post it here in this thread.  It will serve as an incentive for others to join the next gathering.

I promise all this, the next time I come over for a visit, Cebu is on my short list!  I'll look forward to seeing whoever can come during that visit.  If it's anything like the times Dan and I met, I'm certain it will be fun!   :)

It would be great if you could be there Jack but I am sure we all understand if you cannot make it and I understand if my time frame does not fit in with when the others would wish to have the meetup.

Something to ponder about locations. It might be worthy to consider a small resort of sorts and work a deal with the owner as what happened at 100 Islands for the other group I'm in. He can accommodate what we send and has blocked those two days for the group function. They will also provide evening buffet and breakfast buffet. 750php per head includes room, both meals and use of facilities for the day. All the owner has requested is guaranteed deposit since he has closed the place for those two days. If I'm not mistaken I think the individual making the arrangements is the owner or at least a close relative of the owner. I would think there is someone on here that has those types connections. It's a win win for all the the owner as he gets near full occupancy for those days and if it it off season great business for him. For the group everyone stays in one central location.

That's why I suggested we set up more than one.  Make it a semi-regular gathering once every 3 or 4 months.  That would give those of us who don't live there full time a chance to make at least one of the gatherings.

The dates don't need to be carved in stone, just a tentative time.  Then when a few can gather, they set a place and time here so others can make arrangements.  I also like Dan's suggestion that we pick a small resort as the central meeting place.  I'm sure that we can get some deals along the way to make it worthwhile for all, even those who plan to attend only as a day trip and not an over-nighter.

Lets just ask the NSA for a list of the expats on this forum that live here full time and what regions their in

Then get Homeland Security yo provide us a list of  members intended travel dates here

With that info we can plan the most suitable place for the get together to be held

Should be at least a 5 star Philippine Resort offering fish on the stick, running water, a generator and warm beer, air condition rooms optional

Will try and make the meet. Only ever passed through Cebu on the way to Bohol. Would be good to spend a few days on this island. Will be back in the Philippines from mid November to early February. If can't make the first get together then one in the future shouldn't be a problem. Turn 60 next year and am thinking of retirement, in which case would spend longer periods in the PI.
If the health holds out plan to do quite a bit of traveling. Never been to Palawan or Mindanao yet. So many places on our bucket list.

I guess you'd be talking about "foreigners and filipino friends" and their recent get together trip I was reading about while in Aust ? That's a pretty good point and sounds as though they had a blast and were well catered for doing it that way.

My dates aren't in concrete yet but I would expect to be home around mid Jan for 3 weeks and Cebu is very easy as I can get a direct flight from Legazpi or maybe ride a bike if the weather is okay.

Update on myself and my wife. I was delayed due to some medical issues and tests, so we will be in Cebu City before the end of Feb and we would be happy to meet up with anyone who would like to, in March and part of April. Sometime in April we plan on being in CDO and then Bukidnon and then back to CDO for a total of maybe 10 days. If anyone is interested in meeting up then let me know and I will be happy to private message you my Philippine cell number.

I'm game!! hope I can make the trip whenever it takes place.....I'll put in a pitch for a location.....try the resorts in Iba, Zambales. It's still an overlooked spot 2hrs west of Olongapo by victory liner. The resorts there are reasonable and the beaches r second to none in the phils. hope it stays that way.

My wife and I are in Cebu now should anyone wish to meet up after a few days when my I get my head together and get some shopping done. The older I get the harder these trips are on my body. :(

Well our trip did not go bad but it also did not go great, in Florida the flight was delayed for one hour 25 minutes with only a 2 hour layover thus by the time we deplaned, meaning we would miss our Atlanta flight to Seoul but as luck had it, that flight was also delayed by 20 minutes so we were able to run to the train and then run to the gate for that flight and got there 10 minutes before it left but the gate door was already locked but the attendant was able to open it for us and of course our luggage did not get to that flight, so when we finally arrived in Cebu it was without 4 pieces of luggage.

Next as we were finally in our condo and just about ready for bed the people who handle the luggage called to tell us they located the luggage with their computer and we would get it the next day. They called again last night to say the luggage is in Cebu and will deliver it tomorrow, now if the contents are intact and they actually deliver it tomorrow, then all is well.

BTW if any of this does not make sense, then please excuse me, as my brain that usually runs badly is right now running even worse. :(

We use Korean Airlines and have for probably the last 5 or 6 years. We take Delta to a place Korean starts from, so in our case Atlanta works out best for us and then KAL to Seoul and then KAL directly to Cebu. I hate flying into Manila since they had always tried to take advantage of us in past years, one year a guard distracted me while another stole my pants out of my carry on and then the other guard told me that I should reward the other one for finding my pants  :o and at least 2 other years, customs had their hands out telling us they would have to search every inch of our suitcases, until my wife handed them the money they wanted and then they just passed our luggage along. Of course my wife is not Tagalog, so that might play into our issues as they treat her as a foreigner just as they had treated me.

Just for a follow up to the meet up, my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting the other Lee (coleman) and his lovely wife and member Ronin and his lovely wife, it was great meeting you all and we feel we now have gained some great friends.

During the meet up, we all got to meet quite a large group of members from another forum and it was a pleasure meeting up with them as well. Forums are a great way to meet people and make some great friends, I highly recommend members who wish to, meet up with other members.

It was a great time, putting a face on people you have known for years is a lot of fun and I can tell you rarely do they look like you expected them to.
One of the best things was for Maline to meet other wife's and girl friends that are with expats, like forums, the experience of meeting folks that are actually living here or here and other countries opens the perspective.  Also the advice you can get is invaluable.
Last but not least, making new friends is a good thing...

We made it to Cebu safe, now I just have to wait until my brain arrives. The trip went well, I was able to sign up for a 7 day plan on my pocket wifi by passing a load to it from my wife's phone and then one from my phone since it required p250 and passaload was limited to p200 each, anyway I am back online and hope to meet up with some of you who are in Cebu or will be visiting.

Well we are back in Cebu, should anyone from the forum member or visitor wish to meet up for coffee or just general bs, that's right Lee2 or sometimes referred to as Lee number 2 by those who may not like me lol is in Cebu.

There is an expat group here in Cebu named the Cebu Expat Group and they have monthly get togethers, so as an example, on the 26th and 27th they will have a meet up at the Marco Polo Hotel and members get a decent price to eat out there.
Cost:  50% off buffet is P880 Net. One beverage (Soft drink/Wine/Juice) and coffee/house tea are included with the price, just as an example, so it gives expats and tourists a chance to go out to nice places and save a bunch of money on costs, so if you are in or on Cebu, feel free to let me know privately and I can tell you how to contact them, they already have lots of members, Monday the 26 is fully booked with over 100 going to dinner and so far Tuesday is still available.

Couples come from all over Cebu Island to attend, some use it as an excuse to do some shopping, others come in to meet up with friends and shop etc, I think one couple may be coming in from Leyte and another from Tuburan and so on, it is often a big event.

Cebu is to big and congested for me. I like it as a place to visit for no more than 5 days. In my 12 years in the fils I prefer living in Dumagate and if you want a larger city Cagayan De Oro=probably the least cost metro city in the fils.

I met my wife in CDO and we have spent a lot of time there over our years of marriage, so I would second your vote, yet in past years the power went out too often when compared to Cebu, I guess it is all a matter of taste. Welcome to the forum...
