Title: First time posting?
Post by: on January 04, 2008, 10:59:07 AM
For those of you that are new to the \'Forum\' format, your 1st post may be a bit confusing. Don\'t be put off, it is just different from using a group.

Once you are a member, you will need to select ANY folder that has a subject that interests you. If not sure which folder to choose at this stage, then start off in the \"getting your feet wet\' folder. Once inside the folder you will see a button called \'New Topic\' and off you go. No different than emailing.

Welcome to the Forum.

All,

I have changed the name of the board from \'Getting your feet wet\' to \'Don\'t know where to post 1st time. Post here\'. Hope this makes more sense.

When in this board, just look for the button marked \'NEW TOPIC\" click it & off you go. Click on the \'POST\' button to finish.

Hi moccalyn and welcome to the forum. I am an American married to a pinay and we live part time in Cebu. Please tell us more about yourself when you have time. I always enjoy reading a woman\'s point of view and especially a pinay (if you are one) because I learn from every person that I have the pleasure to meet, either in person or on-line.

Hope to see more of your posts.

Hi everyone

I\'m also new to this board, but as I\'m head over heels in love with my Phoebe from Philippines and considering a move to Cebu, I thought this would be the place for some good advice along this journey.

I\'m a 31 years old Dane and a former IT engineer that is now working as Distribution Manager and IT Manager in a somewhat large company I started with 3 friends a little over 5 years ago. I havn\'t seen my sweetheart in person since january and looking very much forward to seeing her again soon, and I hope I can settle down in the Cebu area later this year.

I look forward to interacting with all of you and drawing on your experience.

Hi Miklos,

Are you moving your company to Cebu, or can you continue to work from Cebu, or are you cashing in and retiring at a very young age?

It would great for you if you have a situation where you can live in the RP and continue to earn first world earnings.

I have retired (at 57, wish I were 31  >:() and also intend to move to the Cebu area (where asawa\'s family still lives) once I get affairs finished up here in the States.

Good luck with your plans. Hope to see more postings from you.

Thanks for the welcome all of you :)

The company is too big to move, and I\'m a bit too young to retire so my plan was to move to Philippines for at least a year and try to get some business going there as well. I\'m lucky to be in a situation where I can take a step back from the company and hire myself as a \'consultant\' to keep a decent first world income. With some hard work I expect to be able to build products I then can sell to the company back home - a win/win situation for all :)

I must admit that right now just being with my girl overshadows anything else, it\'s hard to be apart for this long.

Welcome Miklos to the site. Sounds like you got your act in order for such a young man. Another Bill Gates in the making, no sincerely I wish you all the best and the way you describe yourself I just think you will be successful with that positive attitude, and over here in the RP attitude is very important , for adaption is the name of the game, you don\'t adapt and you will be miserable or die.

I look forward to having you and your posts here, seems like you have a lot to offer, sorry I was late in welcoming you aboard, but I was up wasted my time in Manila at the VA listening to a bunch of 32 year old doctors tell me I was an anomaly and clinically dead...damn strange world...but the beat and the murf go on!

Hi Y\'all, my name is Doni, I am engaged to a lovely Filipina named Jen. I currently reside on Cape Cod, Massachusetts but plan a permanent move to Manila approximately the end of November. I have previously worked and lived in Metro Manila for about 1 year back in 04 and 05, I fell in love with the people and the culture and promised myself I will return someday to stay. The culture is a perfect fit for my personality and ideals. I am seeking to open a few Internet shops as a way of making a living. Jen is a CPA and we both have IT backgrounds. I am hoping to make some new friends here and see if my perceptions are in line with reality and not just a rose colored glasses view of Pinas. I speak some Tagalog and keep learning more thanks to Jen and some of my Pilipino friends. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this forum, I look forward to a wonderful future in Pinas! God bless all at salamat!

Welcome Doni,

A lot of people in Manila would like to move to Cape Cod... Good to see someone who appreciates the beauty of the Philippines.

There is a wealth of information on this Forum on the subject of running businesses in the RP... which is easy to find and you can read all the back-posts.  But, feel free to ask anything you like and you will likely get a lot more answers (or opinions ;D) than you really wanted.

Welcom aboard and good luck with your plans.

Welcome Doni,

If the internet shops you are planning to open are internet cafe\'s, then you could have a problem earning a reasonable living from them. They are on almost on every street corner, similar to sari-sari stores, and at the very low rates they charge, I can\'t see how any of them can have much income at all.

Thanks Tom, Colin and Chel!
Yeah I know the shops are almost as prevalent as karaoke bars, but like anything else in retail, location is the key. By themselves a single shop can provide a small income, but the proximity of schools, hospitals and the like are critical to the success and income potential. I have found a couple that I am interested in buying...all depends on the accounting and true revenue developed. I also have 18 years experience in Call Center Management, so if I need to work a real job I will. I have a few contacts that have expressed interest in employing me, but only if I am already there, no more hiring ex-pats and relocating them to Pinas from the US.

Hi Everyone!

I\'m a newbie to both this Forum and the LITP YahooGroup.

Thanx to the Owner, Admins and Moderators for approving my joining. Looking forward to catching up on the posts. So far, in 28 minutes of backreading, I can already tell that this Forum will be very helpful, and the people seem to be very friendly in general.

I just retired from the United States Postal Service. Unlike most of the gentlemen here, I was born in the Philippines, became naturalized U.S. citizen in \'83. My wife is a Chinese citizen. Graham is the name of our 10-year old boy. We live in the Seattle metro area of the State of Washington.

Been preparing to return (for good) to my beloved birth country for a while now. I\'m hoping that this materializes sometime before the end of the year.

Again, I\'d like to express my gratitude for having been given the opportunity to join this wonderful site.

Salamat!

Sonny

Hi Sonny walang anoman and welcome to the forum. A lot of great info here and I am sure you will find much of it useful. You will also find a lot of retired postal workers living in the Philippines, I met at least 5 living in Cebu alone.

Since you are Filipino, might be a good idea to apply for dual citizenship if you have not already and that should make the transition easier IMO. Good luck and be sure to post any question that any of us might be able to help you with.

I agree with Dave, and I live in Puerto  ;) ;D

Puerto is OK for a few days outings to places like Honda Bay and the underground river. There are also a number of other tours that are not extensively advertised and would need to be researched and booked locally. For example http://www.palawansailing.com/home.html. We found this one by chance in a local restaurant. Hotels and tour operators will have this sort of information.

I would recommend places like El Nido or Coron. Port Barton has, I believe, the longest stretch of sandy beach in the Philippines, also very quiet.

Well this is my first post on the board so I have better say who I am.

Originally from the UK but lived overseas most of my life and now my final couple of years of working life are being spent in Libya!!!

The big plan is to call it a day at the end of next year and then share my time between Philippines and Thailand.  My base in Philippines will be Busuanga but will probably need to get my fix of Thailand every couple of months.

I am not married anymore, and at the moment have no intention of falling into the big black hole again.

Cheers

Hi all,
I just joined today and have posted twice. But I\'m experiencing some bizarre issues that maybe someone can explain for me.

1. I started a new topic in the Visas category. But it doesn\'t show up there. Someone is seeing it because I already got 2 responses. But the only way for me to see it is to go to my profile and look up \"my posts\". Are newbie topics hidden to all but moderators?

2. I tried to reply to the above mentioned thread, but it gave me a message saying I had to wait 120 seconds. OK, fine. So after several minutes I clicked \"post\" again and this time it told me it already posted. But it didn\'t. Anyone know what\'s going on?

thanx

Al,

Here\'s a link to your Visa post:
http://livinginthephilippines.com/forum/index.php/topic,3939.msg38711.html#msg38711

I think the only problem with your posting is that you have to wait a few minutes between posts.  We had to set it that way due to spammers flooding the Forum with their junk.  Newbie posts are not hidden for any reason.

Welcome to the group!   :)  :)  :)

Hi GrayWolf,
Thanks for the link. I figured out what it was: I just didn\'t see it because there were a bunch of stickies ahead of it.

As for the 120 second wait, I understand the desire to prevent spammers but this seems excessive to me.
And apparently the waiting time applies to both posts and PM\'s. I just posted something to a thread, then I noticed I had a PM. I read the entire PM and composed a brief \"thank you\" response. When I clicked send I got the same \"Error. wait 120 seconds\" message. For a PM? Aaargh!
So then I hit the back button a couple times, waited another minute or so, then composed and tried to send the reply PM again. Again I got the \"Error. wait 120 seconds\" message!
(OK, I need an aspirin now.)
So does the 120 second clock start all over again after it gives you the first error message?
And does the 120 second wait have to be until you start composing the next message or until you hit send?
I\'m afraid I\'m gonna have to employ a stop watch just to use this forum.

What seems excessive to some is relief to others.   ;D  We do only what we have to do in order to prevent the Forum from being taken over.  The other option is for all posts to be put in line and wait until a Mod has time to read it and then allow it to be posted.  Not what we want to do.  We have enough work as it is.

No one else has a problem with the 120 second rule.  May I suggest you slow down a little and relax?  Then you won\'t need an aspirin.   ;D

BTW, you do realize that most of your post here is a copy and paste from another post elsewhere?

Manigong Bagong Taon, pare!

Yeah, I did that in hopes of doubling my odds of getting a knowledgeable answer about when the 120 seconds needs to be, i.e.- do you have to wait the 120 seconds before you click reply and start composing your next message or until you click \"post\"? (That makes a big difference)
Should I have just left a link to this post/thread instead?

btw, can you translate \"Manigong Bagong Taon, pare!\" for me?
thanks

\"Manigong Bagong Taon, pare!\"

Happy New Year buddy (male pal, friend, etc.).  For a female replace \"pare\" with \"mare\".

Down in Bisayaland it\'s \"Malipayong Bagong Tuig\" \"dong\" for a male friend or \"day\" (pronounced like dye) for a female

Yeah, what Goyo said.   ;D

As far as how, why, when about the 120 second rule...  We did what we had to do in order to alleviate another problem with the Forum.  Hell, it takes me more than 120 seconds to take another sip of tea and read the next post!   :D

Slow down and enjoy your time with us (as well as life in general)    ;)   :)   :)
