Windows 10 to take longer to reach billion-device goal

I am sticking with 7, had they not pushed 10 so hard almost forcing people to upgrade, then I might have considered it but when anyone tries to ram something down my throat, I tend to feel it would not be good for me or they would not be trying to force it upon us.

I am happy for those of you who have gone with 10 and not had any problems and I may go with it in the future when I eventually buy a new computer but my current 2 laptops (one for my wife and one for me) and my desktop, will hopefully never see 10 on them.

Microsoft said Friday it will take longer than initially expected for Windows 10 to reach a billion devices due to the lack of traction in its smartphone business.

The company had set an ambitious goal of having a billion gadgets running on Windows 10 monthly when the latest generation operating software was release nearly a year ago.

The US technology giant said Windows 10 is already powering more than 350 million devices monthly in what it described as “the hottest start in history.”

I am leaving 7 alone on both mine and my wife's laptops.  But, since 8 isn't all that hot, she has a desktop at work which the only thing I could find a couple of years ago locally to put on it was 8 so, I am thinking about downloading 10 on it.  She also has a desktop there with XP on it but MS isn't allowing a free 10 for XP.  Too bad.  The XP is Pro and if it was like the others, could download 10 Pro and I could see what that was like.  The one with 8 is only the Basic.  I got 7 Pro on mine but no way and I am going to risk it.  Am not interested in doing an updated image to reload if I don't like it.  Yeah, MS has been pushing too hard.

Our 2 17"  laptops we bought last year while on vacation in N. Calif had Windows 8.1 preinstalled and now has Windows 10 which was updated automatically when it became available, which I hate and we seldom use our laplaps now, since we use our cellphones most of the time.
I still have my 7 yr old HP desktop and old laptap both with Windows Vista, which. I prefer over Windows 10 any day. Windows 7 I also did not care for either, XP was better, but we no longer have any PC or laptop with XP. Oh well, that's life in the techno world.

My upgrade to 10 went ok.   Haven't had any big problems,  however did have few small ones.  Better then other MS upgrades went for me in the past.  I use Linux/Ubuntu for my primary work station to develop software, completely non windows.

I agree that XP was one of the best software for computers ever.  It took a very long time for most ppl to move away from it.  Most had to be forced in one way or another.

One reason (just a guess) that MS might be pushing V10 is to consolidate to one.  The internal cost of supporting so many versions is crazy.  If it was just one it is so much more efficient (cost effective).

Microsoft really hurt themselves with Windows 8.  That did a lot of damage and now they are not trustworthy in many eyes and that I think is the reason for the trouble now with 10.  I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything.  Love the new Windows Defender.  Probably the safest windows setup yet.  Love the app setup and all that also. 

Yes, I miss the ability to play some of the older games that won't work on windows 10, but I can get over that with the much more smoothly operating system that 10 is.

I was going to stay with windows 7, but MS pushed windows 10 on to me. It takes a little getting use to.

Some of you guys saying that it was pushed on you or it downloaded automatically, yeah, MS has been pushy but to my knowledge is was not forced on you.  You either had settings allowing it to download automatically or else you hit something and gave it the ok.  In Windows Update screen, they have it listed as "Important" rather than "Optional" or at the most "Recommended". There is also a way to disable the alert which tries to get you to download it.

I had some worries about Win 10 but found out much later that my Win 7 ultimate was a fake so upgraded to windows 10 last year and it will load and shut down very quickly, nothing like the long wait for 7 ultimate. 

I really don't see any difference other than an improved operating system that also can be linked to my cell phone apps (still learning), windows Vista was hands down the worst operating system but that's what I got when I bought my first laptop it was always a slow start and slow shut down and it seemed to drag the processor down, I'm not a computer/software expert so take my comments with a grain of salt.

Only thing that I needed to do after upgrading to Win 10 was update the Java, flash players, my video card.  It's basically the same only a little different in finding the settings but there's several ways to go about that, both my desk tops have Win 10 now.  Video calls on skype or Facebook are flawless I have the A4tech web cam, even playing games online they work, the tech will claim that most of the free video games he gives you won't work but they do and there's a work around if they don't and Youtube will walk you through that.

Improvement reminds me of what it's like getting a new smart phone, what a difference in connectability and ease of apps and programs, I am not feeling any downsides even my son told me to upgrade our other desk top so I did about 3 months ago, last note I still can download music. movies from Youtube or other spots on the internet.

If you do not like or want Win10 on the 2x 17" laptops, open control panel & uninstall Win10. Yes even though it was automatically updated, its still easily reverted back to your original Win8 / 8.1.

I had an 10yo Dell running Win7 & a crappy Toshiba running Win8.1. First I updated the Toshiba, it worked well enough, but I do not like the fact that most in built (already installed) software required lots & lots of additional downloads to suit Win10. What a complete pain in butt. That's when I started looking about, in Win10 & on forums using my Dell (still with Win7) and finally figured out how to easily revert back to the previous Win version. So simple, no additional loading or downloading software drivers for my anti-virus, Office & many other programs I used. The reversion was simple and painless and all worked as it did before the Win10 take over. Glad to say I off loaded my Toshiba, as the CPU & video were slow and not so great. It went back to my brother, who sold it to me in the first place. All good, for both of us.

My Dell, old faithful, is still running Win7, but my new MSI kick butt machine runs Win10. Only 8 secs to login & only 20 secs to complete shutdown, except when installing updates for Win, the usual thing.

You hit this on the head. Win10 has Xbox built in and does not allow older Win games to play. The main reason is to make Win10 operators, actually PAY for new games & pay for on-line steaming. Its still all about "MONEY" and Win10, for "gamers", is to force them to buy the newer versions and use the internet more. Oh did you know, when you stream on-line, the "Apps" or games allows for MS to scan thru your computer. OH MY GOSH!!! Its part of the small print on an app for Cel & on the box the game comes in. They can trace you wherever. There are ways to use streaming & still block look ups by MS, but this is a lengthy and time & effort all consuming process. But worth it if you want to keep out "Big Brother MS".

I have this setup on my old Dell with Win7 and still tweeking the nitty gritties on my Win10 gaming laptop. It also stops FB from tracking your searches & adding adds etc. Yes MS now owns Google, which has a big stake in FB etc etc. Global control LOL, go MS (Big Brother is watching).

Fake Win7, is a cheap simple fix. Go on-line to MS, purchase a licence for about $30, problem solved, including necessary or missing updates. Of course, that is after you revert the PC/Laptop back to the original state. Two of my friends here, have recently purchased the licence with a good local PC guy, fixing the issue for them. My 2 friends are either old or computer illiterate,,,,,,,,, said with kindness & tongue in cheek, hehehe.

Of course, that is after you revert the PC/Laptop back to the original state. Two of my friends here, have recently purchased the licence with a good local PC guy, fixing the issue for them. Thanks... hugh?  I didn't realize it was that cheap, I'm going to keep the Win 10 but if for some reason it's another copy because my license was fake then I'll need to do as you say and purchase a license but so far it's been good to me and the deadline if I'm not mistaken for Win 10 is this month, so after July it has to also be purchased.

Another reason to switch your operating system to Linux based like Ubuntu or similar which are free. Most games these days are compatible or have an emulator that acts like Windows and allows them to play. The new stable releases of Ubuntu looks and act just like Windows for the most part with minimal learning curve. I haven't used or paid for MS Office in years or most of the other products that MS tries to force you to purchase. I use Libre Office 5 which looks and acts just like MS Office and is completely free plus it allows you to convert your work from or to MS Office format with ease. Next computer I get will not have MS operating system installed, I will install all open source products for free, I'm tired of making Bill Gates richer than he already is.

Interesting... hey so you use Ubuntu? is there another operating system you recommend that is free.   Is there any downside that you can think of? What about virus's.
