Anyone know if you should have a VPN (virtual private network) if you are trying to transfer funds via a transfer service provider while in the Philippines?  Got some info from a Xoom representative and she told me you could probably get away with transferring money from the US to yourself in the PI for a short while then you would be cutoff due to anti money laundering laws.

VPNs wont save you.

I use xoom and so far pretty much nothing but that monthly for over 6.5 years now.  The reason I'm safe is I send it to Tina and it's comes from my USA bank account.  Even then, they stopped it twice.  The first time I just told them I was sending it to my GF.  That took care of all issues for about a year.  Then they stopped it again.  This time I'm sending it to the same woman who is my fiance.  That was about 4-5 years ago.  Since then there hasn't been a single issue.

What they are looking for is the same name sending money to the same name.  That's it. VPN won't change your name.  I do not think I ever used a VPN to send the money.  At least not on purpose.  I have a VPN I used for other things and maybe sometimes it was still on when I did my money transfer.  Who knows.

I do have every intention next time I am back in the USA to open a Charles Schwab account as that to me is the best way to get money from your US bank account over here to yourself with the lowest costs/fees.  Cheaper than even xoom.com.

But a VPN isn't going to change your name and that is what they look for.  I got a USAF friend of mine over here using xoom also now.  He also had the same issue.  Had to make a phone call to xoom and say that his wife lives over in the Philippines and he was sending her money.  So far, it's worked for him.

I have Navy Federal and I have a Charles Schwab brokerage account linked to my Schwab checking account.  I got this account solely for the purpose of visiting or living in the Philippines.  Works great here in the US.  All ATM fees are refunded back to my checking account on the last day of the month.
