Is anyone currently growing rice?
« on: July 25, 2020, 09:37:55 AM »
We are picking up a small parcel of land(3500sqm) that is currently a rice field, that I will most likely sub-divide in the future.
I contemplating keeping it in rice production for a few years until I can get over there full, or mostly full time.
Can someone give me a current approximate cost/profit breakdown on keeping such an endeavor going.
Or should I plan on filling in the mud-pit and going ahead with sub dividing sooner rather than later?

Thanks

Our property was a Rice field.  We sectioned off one hectare, and built on it.  We currently have 3 hectares in Rice this year.

1.)  For us, the largest determinant of costs was the quality of the person farming it.  Ours was piss poor, so the return was likewise.  He believed that his job was to skim and scam off of us instead of grow a crop.

2.)  You can make money at Rice,  but it is very thin and "timing" dependent.  Timing being driven by the rains.  Transplant too early or late and your paying for lots of irrigation.

So all in all I'd say that unless you had a trusted family member, who was an experienced rice farmer doing it for you.  It would almost be impossible to profit at it remotely.

As for developing it ..... well I've heard that they are cracking down on that.  Starting to really enforce all the building regs on the books.  The bureaucracy of which make building in the states look like a walk in the park.

We never had too many problems ....  but ..... Now a days if we build something code enforcement and taxation show up a few days later with printouts from Google Earth to investigate.

Good luck.

Copy that.
Food for thought.
I'm not sure how code enforcement in Bumfluk Leyte, but I will have my sis-in-law helper look into it.
I can only hope that as long as nobody sees my kano face in the goings on, that things will be a little more lax.
Thank you.

Certain places you don't want to get caught as a Kano in the rice paddy with a measuring tape.....or your gonna need a good Perry Mason.... whether your family or spouse own the land. Let them or a surveyor size up all transactions. Money Talks and Bulsh*tt cost more in PI....be warned!
