Rice harvest
« on: June 12, 2008, 01:07:25 PM »
A while ago I was asked to post up a few pictures of our rice harvest. I thought everyone here would have seen this, but maybe not if you live in a city. So, in defiance of popular demand, here are some pics

When it looks like this, it is ready for cutting.

Not the local chapter of Abu Sayyaf but the harvesters protecting themselves against extremely itchy rice straw.

The cut straw gets pushed into the big red monster...

... and out comes the palay.

leaving a lot of waste

which skilled hands can extract further grains from, using traditional methods. People who sift the waste keep whatever they collect.

And that is our palay.

Is that your share or all you get from a harvest?

That was the total harvest, with 1 of the sacks going to the workers. The field is small, only 1300 square metres. We are not serious about it as a rice field and will plant fruit and veg there eventually.

OIC, you have a small part of the field shown in the photos.

I was thinking you need to get a different trasher if that was all you were getting from that field or plant a different kind of rice.  ;D

The rice farmers around here would love to have such a thrasher, but can\'t afford the rent or fuel Soon we will see if my bicycle powered, (was treadle powered with parts missing), thrasher works, unknown at this time and another wild eyed idea I came up with.  ::)   ;D

Ray, Isabela is considered The Rice Granary of the Philippines, so it\'s not surprising they have all the kit here. That thresher was hired from an agricultural suppliers for a day only, or maybe half a day.

I love the idea of your bike-powered machine. Hope you will let us know how it works out, and maybe post some pictures as well.
